Hey for all you guys that say they get 18 in the city are you keeping the RPMs low like under 4000 or 3000 or are you just drivingthe car normal however you want and sometimes accelerating hard ??

I don't redline mine at every shift (if I did, I'd constantly be running at 100 MPH+). I do shift between 5K-6k pretty regularly depending on traffic.

I use 5th a lot in town. I reserve 6th for the interstate exclusively.

-17.9 MPG in town driving
-23.7 MPG in the interstate cruising at 75 MPH

Using stricly premium with about 1K on the clock.

Question Comparison.

Right, just out of curiousity, I'd like to know why most people are complaining about fuel consumption?

17MPG doesn't seem that expensive when I compare it to my current car, and it has "four" doors...

What exactly was everyone expecting?

No, with any luck, when I get back to South Africa, my local mazda dealer will have a nice Rx, available for a test drive.

*Just for a sidenote. When I parked my car at home, the Average consumption was 23.5L/ 100Km...
The car is an Audi S3 (MY2003)

Expecting values that are close to what was printed on the sticker.

i dont see why you keep asking about octane; the only way your going to get NEAR that sticker number is only with premium fuel which is what the car was probably tested with

I'm getting about 1MPG better mileage with 89 octane than with 93 octane.

I am averaging 17mpg after 2200 miles. I am a little disappointed as this is worse than my SUV that weighs 4400lbs (plus 800lbs for 5 adults and 1 baby and stuff) and is ULEV and does 0-60 in just under 8 secs (I am getting over 18mpg on average).

Here is my fuel economy tracking:

Not really - my last three tankfuls gave 18.50mpg, 17.41mpg and 16.87mpg in that order (the last at over 2000 miles). Not a good trend.

You can forgive Puppy1's conclusion. I was thinking along the same lines. Your chart clearly does not indicate those last three tankfuls you just mentioned.

I just hit 4000 miles on the way home tonight. Since about 2500 miles I have been getting 21.7-22.1 mpg, and 310 or a few more miles per tank. I've tried 92, 89 and 87 ocatne, the car seems to run the same and achieve the same mpg on all three octane grades. Nothing to complain about here!

We are dipping DOWN more lately but our car has 3000 miles on it and it is our commuter her in Atlanta. Our range is 17-19mpg.

I bet if I drove straight on some highway trip, no A/C, I could get 23mpg too.

Not horrible, I wish I could have the guts to put regular in it though.
