2004 model vs other models?

Hey guys i am looking into buying an rx8 once I sell my vert' 7 and 240sx.
Anyways most of the 8's I see in my price range are 2004's. IIRC they have a 4 port engine, which was changed to 6 port engine on the 2005 or 2006 model?
Is there really too much of a difference between the '04's compared to the 05,06's that I should be aware of?

Thanks.

2004 off the boat had the wrong ECU tune, and not enough oil injected, so 2004s had the highest engine failure rate. That being said, if a 2004 has had it's engine replaced 2006 or more recent, then it's fairly sure that it is doing just fine. Earlier, and it might have gotten put back in with an old flash still. I'm not saying that all 2004s are pending engine failures if they haven't already, as plenty are doing just fine, but it is certainly something to think about, and having an engine replaced in a 2004 that you are considering isn't a bad thing.

2005s are somewhat better, but 2006s are even more so.

The 4 port vs 6 port is only transmission related in terms of what you have.

The 4 port engine was only used on 2004 and 2005 automatic transmission 8s. The 6 port was used for 2004 and 2005 manual transmissions, as well as all 2006+.

^ +1 Listen to the man

4 port has only a 4 speed trans
6 port has 6 speed trans

Much different gearing between the two

You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one

all manuals are 6 port at least in states.
the 04 if recalls are not done had not enough oil injected into the engine thus a lot of of engine failures. dont be put off by that tho, cuz theres still 8yr/100k engine warranty.

fyi, my insurance went up 12 dollars a month from my '94 ford ranger//it's a 4dr.
I have an 04 and I premix on original engine and not a problem so far. warranty is nice security. Maintenance a must.

I pay ~$120 a year more for my 8 than my wife's Mazda5. My 8 was a ~$95 per year increase over my 02 Protege5.

If you are getting rid of an RX-7 and a 240, your insurance should drop considerably.
