Yeah, that's it... I didn't research the car.

You're right, the window sticker ONLY said 18-25 mpg. What was I thinking?! I should have KNOWN it would only be 13-18 mpg. * rolleyes *

Actually, you sound like an ***. The EPA numbers are an estimate, and the big numbers you quoted are "average", look below and you'll see the actual range. Ignorance is not an excuse in life.

Jason, he has a point. A lot of people buy cars based on the info provided at the dealer,, web, and magazines and also haven't been to the forum for the car (which they probably don't even know about until after you get one). Since the magazines have only recently had extended drives of the rx-8, we are only now getting the extremely low city mpg articles. On the majority of cars the EPA estimates are CLOSE. If it was 16-23 I don't think most people would complain. But the one can drive the car and never even hit the low end of the range (and not be driving it that hard) is kind of odd.

Let's all be a bit more reasonable here to our fellow drivers (all around). Possible low mpg is a downside to this car. It happens to a lot of us, and we're not idiots. I bought the car knowing it could get lower than EPA estimate. But I get a "hell" of a lot lower on average. I had hoped for a slightly higher average. I am not selling the car, but it still bites. People act if its all the buyers fault and not any of mazda's. Yes, they are not Mazda's numbers. But how are people to know if mazda doesn't say anything different. Up until very recently, the only place to find out was THIS forum.

Hmm. Mine didn't go down below 13, yet my card did.

8 is hard to feed.. T T ..... and ... face to that la.... i am finding a part time job for feeding my 8.. even i got tons of homework and the a bloodless and meanly prof....

That is exactly my point. On the dealer sticker that is on the window of every RX-8 is not just the average EPA numbers, but the expected fuel range. I don't have the paper in front of me, but the fuel range was something like 13-22 mpg, which pretty accurately describes what most people are getting, even those with abnormally bad fuel mileage.

Most RX-8's will get no less than 16-17 mpg in city driving. Those of you with lower, even when shifting below 4k rpm and granny style driving really need to get on Mazda's *** about the poor performance. But that isn't indicative of the majority of the RX-8's on the road.

I get 18.5mpg on average, with 95% city driving and "moderate" spirited driving. I'm still in break in, so I'm keeping it under 4k rpms, but I wouldn't classify it as granny style driving either.

Actually, its 15 to 20 for city. 21-28 for highway.

I regularly get below 15 (in fact its a happy day when i go above) in the city.

But this is besides the point. If I went and bought almost any other car, I would most likely get within the EPA range listed in BIG print, or pretty darn close to it. The RX-8 is therefore an exception to the rule, but how are most people supposed to know without this forum.

Might not be (is around here though), but the 2 I have driven are much lower (~13-14 city). Could be the driver, or the environment (hot texas weather), or neither. I am not the only one around here getting poor mileage in my 8.

Mazda will do nothing about current cars. I have let them know, the response was standard junk. If I drive on the highway under 4K rpms, my car gets in the mileage range. They are more likely to work on future cars because of sales possibilities.

Finally, I will reiterate that I like this car. I am not giving it up. I just find the mileage the only major "con" to the car. The "pros" kick that "con"'s ***

Sorry to hear that, but youre gonna have to get used to it. I recently got my car serviced at the dealership and they supposedly gave me the newest flash. For some reason, it seems that i get worse miles. Im almost on half tank and i have only gone about 78 miles.

Regarding the numbers in the window - I've purchased several new cars (Land Rover, Jeep, Honda, Acura...) I have never NEVER gotten worse mileage than that which was printed on the window. If it said 25 Highway, I knew I'd get 27 -30. Everytime.

Really, I love the car - but 13 mpg from a 3, 000 lb car? There really isn't an excuse... I read (C&D, R&T) that it was "thirsty". Consumer Reports said it used a lot of gas. Okay, consider that research. For a 3,000 lb car with excellent aerodynamics, the numbers on the window sticker supported what I read - 18 mpg from an aerodynamic 3,000 lb car sure seemed "thirsty". But 13? That's *#$&ing pathetic.

Still love the car though
