143mph is the fastest I've gone in my 8

The RX8 gets to 130mph pretty easily, it takes much longer to go higher than that. I never had enough room to top it out, 143mph is my current "record". I live in Florida and I often drive highways at 3 or 4:00am, so I have miles to get up to speed and more importantly, room to slow down.

Cheers,

Alex

To get this thread on topic and I am sorry if this has been posted, but perhaps the at is limited because of tire rating? I read the magnum is limited because they put H rated tires on stock. Doesnt the at come with 17" wheels? Maybe different shoes? Just a thought.

After a brief excursion to the 'net I found this in a VA .gov web site. I would appretiate a lawyer among us to do a LexusNexus search and find the Fed Reg that is the source of all our (or at least the poor souls the bought an AT) pain.
Performance: The top speed of the vehicle shall not exceed the speed ratings of the tires provided.
An electronic speed limiter may be installed if necessary.

And TownDrunk posted the question first back on page 3.

Back to the autobahn topic, I think its great how it works in Germany, the autobahn that are not speed controlled are similar to the interstates in the US all the smaller roads/highways have speed limits. There is usually 4-6 lanes so someone who drives slower can find their pace in one of the slower lanes, and only drive in the fastest lane if your going 180km/h +, you see people fly by so fast that you cant even tell what car their driving, it's safe because of the discipline the Germans have in their driving, also you would have to be suicidal to go 100km/h in the fast lane, in north America people abuse the fast lane all the time, and use the speed limit as an excuse, in Germany they wouldn’t live long

On the other hand the drivers in Germany seem much better then in the US or Canada, it may be because its a lot more difficult to get a license, I remember seeing someone on their test and the car has like 20 mirrors and one instructor in the front and another in the back, also I believe the minimum age is higher like 19.

Thumbs down You may never make 19

So as i asked earlier, how could you hit 145?
With an attitude like that, you may never make 19.

Which is fine, that’s up to you. It is just that you may end up taking some one else with you. Say a friend riding with you for some one else on the road. We all understand that it is fun to drive fast.

Work off some of that enthusiasm and earn some bucks and take a performance driving class and take the car to the track and have all the fun in the world safely. That’s what most of the rest of us do.

On the track, the Dragon has gotten to near 150 mph on the straights. On the street, it does the posted limit within 2 to 5 MPH.

Going fast in a straight line is something most anyone can do. Controlling the car in corners at high speed takes some training and practice. Public streets is not the place to practice the high speed part of car handling. One skill that many drivers who seek to performance drive is patience, knowing when to hold back and when to go for broke. Those who fail to learn that skill often wreck not only their car but someone else’s as well.

With all that enthusiasm it would be regrettable to miss out on all the possibilities ahead of you in performance driving and possible racing because you are impatient at 18.

Wow a 10+page thread on the merits of driving well over 100mph!?!?!?

Does it 'really' matter if the at car is governed to 'only' 125mph vs the mt 145mph?

Maybe I'm getting too old here but I would get paranoid at anything over 90mph (actually haven't taken my 8 above 85)......get a ticket for this type of speed and watch the insurance costs sky-rocket not to the safety factor.......things happen ALOT quicker at these speeds....and I would 'think' that not many on the board truly understand this and have much experience dealing with these speeds.

True, however the underlying issue is just as relevant today for new 18 year olds as when this thread was started. :D

Does it matter if you have the Mazdaspeed front and rear spoiler or not? I heard that from 25,000 feet the MT drops 2/10 of a second faster. Is that true?

Here in California the speed limit was at 55mph. Now its at 65mph. Now why did the government decided to raise the speed limit? Well cuz people were complaining too much and the government didn't want to hear any more whining. The main reason the speed limit was at 55 in the first place was that everyone would have better gas mileage. Once you hit 65mph the wind drag practically doubles.

Isn't Montana the only US state not to have a speed limit? . Well I remember reading (actually seeing a pic of the US with speed limits for each state)

Going fast on the Highway/Freeways isn't a bad or necessarilly a dangerous thing. Its when you don't pay attention is when it is dangerous. Why do you think German cars don't have cup holders or its illegal to use cell phones while driving in germany.

In my opinion going 100+ is dangerous and guzzles our limited supply of fossil fuel. On average now a days I drive about 70mph, just to save gas somewhat. But hey if the road is empty and its around 4am by all means go as fast as you want just don't do it near me. One less car means better morning and afternoon commute for me :D

Years ago I had 2 accidents 6 months apart. Both times I was rear ended. The first one I picked up my mother from the store and was on the freeway. Slowed down cuz of heavy traffic. And then Bam! got hit by some 19 year old who barely got her paper license. And had the audacity to claim I stopped in the middle of the damn freeway. Again the case of not paying attention. The second one I was at the front of a three car pile up. The first guy to crash didn't pay attention. And that guy rear ended the guy behind me. And the whole time I was like. "AWWW S&^T!!! not again. " I was hoping the car in front of me would move. So I can get away from the situation.

So what if someone wants to go fast, as long as they are in front of me, That way I can see ahead of time and avoid the collision. If you're driving fast (80-90mph) then the chance of someone hitting you from behind is pretty much low. And even driving at high speeds I keep a good distance. Which was good cuz there were many times I had to stop suddenly at high speeds. I never hit the brakes too hard though. I always engine brake.

Because you're an idiot?

If you read his post, he did that in an FD, not an automatic 8.

I Finished breaking in my 8 the other week. Took a road trip from the bay area out to Chico CA. The nav system ended up putting me on this 2 lane highway (2 lanes on either side of the divider), Completely straight, no traffic coming either way. No cops, no offramps, nothing but me my 8 and open road.

Left it in 6th, and WOT'ed it. watching with glee as the revs slowly climbed, and so did the speedo. Made it all the way to 135 before needing to brake due to running out of straight flat road It was wonderful, the car stayed planted like it was still doing 65.

I'm going home today and on the way back i might try starting at 65 in 4th gear instead.

You cannot drive a sports car and not find out how fast it can go. There is something wrong with you if you dont try it when the (safe) oppertunity presents itself.

i did 200km/h by accident when i was passing some cars, car got there in no time, i looked down and was like, oops.

i'm pretty sure the spedo only goes up to 399.

MT's are drag/gear ratio limited. If it had the hp to push past the drag it'd probably get to 270ish at redline?

It's bound someone will use the search function and post to old threads when every response to a new one is "use the search function"
