No second owner, i got the car with 20,000 on it. The up graded starter is a 09 and up ?. Does the 09 starter for an automatic fit a 2004 automatic ?.

 

Just rolled over 180k on my 04 RX8. Still on original engine and original manual transmission. Replaced the original clutch at 165k.

This is an everyday car. I commuted 1 hour each way in Boston rush hour stop and go traffic for 10 years with this car. Only stayed in the garage if there was snow on the roadway or in the forecast.

Mazda performs the service - which I am pretty good about keeping to the schedule. I burn 89 octane - always have. I have never redlined this car.

Just about 102,000. I was lucky to get the extended warranty replacement on engine 1 at 98,000 miles.


At 12 years old (single owner) and with the expense of a third rebuilt engine soon, I need to start thinking about buying a new car. The trouble is there's nothing out there nowadays that says "buy me!" like the RX-8 did back in '04.

 

Not original owner , i got the car with 20,000 miles on it and i have the not so popular automatic , so is the 09 automatic starter an up grade or no ?.

 

I'm now at roughly 277,000 klm = 172,200 miles.
2nd owner, bought it with about 45,000 klm on it.
first engine replaced under warranty at 146, 000 klm = 90,700 miles.
2nd engine was a dud right from the start and only did 2,500 kilometeres on it before being yanked and replaced under warranty.
current engine is running great and still pulling strong.
too many details to mention as far as maintenance goes, but let's just say the running joke at my Mazda dealer is that I'm gradually replacing the car to new from the inside out.

 

114k on an 06 Shinka, runs like a top. Car came with a huge stack of records, no motor replacements though.

Rest of the car looks great too.

Hi - Mine's an '05 manual with 107k, it's completely stock and I'm the original owner. Had the clutch replaced at 100k and that cleaned up the shifting issues I was having. Thought all my synchros were shot but that wasn't the case.
The engine is still running fine but the transmission is getting noisy, like bearing noise in some gears.
What issue were you having with your transmission? I'm considering a rebuild, but haven't researched it yet. Does anyone know which years of manual trannies are interchangeable?

 

Currently on approximately 104440 miles, original engine. Pulls ok for the compression readings, slight bearing noise, switched to 10w40 semi-synth castrol oil from 5w30 synth castrol oil.
Replaced the oil pellet with the one that sends oil from cold to the rotors few hundred miles back, sump tray 30k back and changed coolant once in my ownership as well as clutch and engine mounts, gear box and diff oil.

Love driving the car though hot starts taking 10 secs to spin engine up. Might switch to a higher cca battery to help spin up quicker and start sooner. I could do with the stationary bearings being replaced but reckon it'll need a rebuild so be cheaper doing it all in one go, ie not have to drop engine in and out and pay twice.

 

Just hit 100k last night. I dont know if this is a good thing...

 

"Original" engine. I love that. I'm still on my "original" heart. If only there was a place I could go to post it.

 

Somehow I expected my engine to blow up at 100k, so there was some stress leading up to the big moment... but it just keeps going. Granted, it's only 108k now, but everything seems fine. Think I'll keep it.

I have 104,000 and change on the original engine. I premixed from day one. Changed oil(synthetic) every 2500 miles, to 3,000 miles.Kept air filter K&N type non oil very clean often.

How did some of you get to your 100,000 miles ?.

 

Did you premix or rely strictly on the omp to get your lubrication >

Yes. Car had hot start issues around 81k which is when I bought it. It was also salvaged, and long story short was driven a little oil starved as it was making its way between the scene of the accident to the yard I bought it from. All in all, I got 40k out of a low compression engine, and the internals are in surprisingly in good shape other than the apex blowout damage. I was going to begin rebuild around this time anyways since I had some time off, but it blew only a week or so before I got the chance. If only it had another 400 miles on the seals.

 

Premixing is a good thing for the renisis motor. I have premixed from purchase date my self. I'm on 104,000 and change miles and she still has the same pull as new. Not suprised the internals were good shape , most likely that way when you premix. I have seen a few motors torn down and always with out exception always cleaner on the inside. The way mazda toned down the OMP because of emission requirements in North America made the lubrisity factor lower than it shpould have been set at. I always run the tank almost dry before emissions and just run gas through the emission test and then straight to the gas station to add my oil to the tank.

 

Everything original except for tires, coils, plugs and plug wires, front brake rotors and pads, oil filter, air filter and fluids.
Never broke down. Not bad for a 13+ years old car.
(now I hope I didn't jinx it by saying this )

Sadly, my 2004 is out off the road for a while. I made it to about 144k miles before my engine developed an internal coolant leak in 2010. I replaced the whole engine in 2011 with a used one from a 2006 and made it to about 218k miles before it threw an apex seal in 2015. some day I'll save up the money to replace the engine again.

I miss driving my RX8.
