Are '05 automatics reliable?

So we know the '06 automatics will have more power/better transmission but the '05 automatics are heavily discounted.

My question is for the people who have current automatics or are in the know, how reliable are the '05's assuming they are up to date with flash, new battery, high rev on occasion to avoid carbon, etc

I spoke to a woman at the dealership this week (while getting my 6 speed serviced) about her RX-8. She has 80k miles on her 04 auto tranny RX-8, and it has been reliable (besides recalls- and one issue I will mention) and still runs like new (and it is even silver- no curse on hers I guess). She was wanting to know if she needed to trade it on a new car because of the miles even though she loved it and didn't wat to trade now. I told her if the car was running like new with 80k miles, that it should be fine for quite a while.

Her concern was based on the auto tranny. It seems just days after buying the car new, the tranny went out. Mazda put a new tranny in, and gave her a nice loaner during that time- so she was completely fine with the tranny replacement.

I explained that new cars are a combination of 20,000 parts, and some of those parts could very well be below specs. The fact that the tranny failed so quickly showed that something was wrong with that tranny. not something wrong with the tranny design.

Anyways- I think the current tranny is an older design. I would be more concerned about an all new tranny being more relaible than a design that has been used for years.

You are correct. The 04/05 4AT was used in the RX7 I believe.

Maybe some people don't know how to drive a Manual? Bad left knee prevents them from enjoying a Manual? They just like the paddle shifter? Or they're the kind of person who can't drive, talk on the phone, AND chow down a Burger while shifting in a Manual?

The 05 Automatics from what I can tell (I own a M/T) have been pretty reliable. the only complaint I'm hearing is that some of them are having a little carbon build up (a rotary engine's arch nemesis) due to not getting the RPM's high enough.
Thread

I would suggest looking into the AT section of this forum.

Ngo, you drive an Automatic???

My wife drives a 05 black auto , we bought it in july . There's 8,000 miles on it and everything is working great . The only thing is she baby's it to much , I drive it and use the paddle shifters and bring up the rpm's . She doesn't like driving the car hard but I guess that will be my job [lol]

My 04 was salvaged and cheap, 9 grand with 500 miles. The downside its an automatic, but it works perfectly except for the 2nd gear getting stuck and over reving. but o well the car looks badass. maybe later one i'll get a new tranny, but for now it cool

Because it is more relaxing to drive an auto than a stick through the neighborhood while looking at x-mas lights. Besides, if I feel the need to to row through the gears I just get the FD out and run it. Anyway, why do you ask why ?

I love my RX-8 (it is an auto). But I am holding out hope that I will someday find a local, well-cared-for, stock 3rd-gen RX-7. I need two rotaries in the garage!

There are a few out there. I have about 23k miles on my BPU(310whp) FD. However, it would be easy for me to go stock because I have all my OEM parts in storage. Good luck in your search.
