Exclamation **Major RX8 Issue Need Feedback**

K here is the scoop.

2005 Mazda RX8
6SPD Manual Transmission
Modification: AEM Intake

Just the other day I was driving home and as i made my last turn onto my street my car went wild. As I approached the turn i was doing about 30 not fast at all, proceeded to take the turn, as i took the turn as i was about ready to straighten the car the rear differential locked, along with the steering wheel and the brakes did not function. Because of the lack of time i had to react it took my car right into a wall on my road. Luckily I wasn't speeding when the accident had occurred or the outcome would have been much worse for me and my passenger. I am now in the process of working this issue with Mazda and i wanted to know anyone here has heard or had similar issues with their RX8. I know there are many recalls on this car and I wanted to see if anyone could also lead me to those sites that list all the recalls for this vehicle. I am kept up on all my maintenance and have kept everything on the car in great shape.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you

Sounds like the battery died or the car shut off.

I would say it was caused by the AEM intake. They don't lrt the car idle properly. The idle stumbled and the car quit running. Hence no brakes or steering and of course it would feel like the rear end froze. The engine quit running.

Self induced accident caused by intake modification that caused car to quit runnung.

iv'e had my 8's accellerator getting stuck about 3 times b4. and one evening coming around a bend that my fiance takes faster than me sometimes my 8 slid out into a kerb and caused a considerable amount of damage, the DSC seemed to only kick in when the car impacted and was on someones lawn after sliding from my lane to the opposite lane for a while it was very disturbing 4 all of us as we know our 8 well. so we thought. where as i've felt the DSC engage sooner b4. the suspension light was on after the impact but once the car was turned off and on again there were no lights on as if everything was ok. i had 2 passengers that were with me one my fiance it was totally unexpected, there was no oil or sand and we know that corner well as it is one of our on the way home favourites.

Im not sure about AEM/MS intake but is there a screen in there ?

if not its going to **** the airflow and your engine might just stop working (out of nowhere)

phat8's is the only one i can agree with. I mean when i take turns my car is not at idle its revving at about 4-5000 rpm's being that im in second gear maybe a bit less, but its not idling, also if the car just dies out the steering wont lock in position as tho it was parked and the brakes will still press a bit, at least enough to slow it down. So it seems like there was something more that occurred.

The steering and brakes cannot "lock" -- two independant systems, each with their own failsafes. Sounds like you took the turn too fast and are looking for ways to cover your tracks.

There are 2 screens for the AEM. The intake was def. not the cause. Was the DSC/TCS turned off?? Also, some people have experienced the electronic power steering cutting out, but to have a story where everything just locks up and stops working I think makes it driver related.

What does that mean?
Do you mean your rear wheels started to slide?
Or do you really mean that your differential stopped allowing your wheels to turn at different rates?

I presume you mean the first. If so, remember that the differential is totally mechanical. No electronic failure can cause the differential to freeze the rear wheels.

Were you shifting gears while turning?

we took the bend at about 60 kph, i was steering lightly to the left when the 8 slid out it was uncorrectable i tried turning to the left and remember seeing myself turning the steering that the top was all the way to the left. the car stopped when both right wheels hit the kerb luckily or else we would of been in a tree. THE DSC WAS ON. nothing locked up, just slid a far distance b4 the DSC activated the car acted as if the DSC was off. i had wide 275/35/20 toyo tyres. got mazda to plug in their computer but they said everything looked ok. your story sounds very odd allround, it's true what REXAPEX said about the diff. but i dont think u would post a thread like this if u were trying to cover up your f*ck up, i would think you would just deal with the problem quietly, and not be bothered cos you have insurance. I KNOW IM NOT 2 PROUD TO SAY WHEN I F**KED UP. BUT I DID'NT THAT NIGHT. I KNOW SOMETHING UNEXPLAINABLE WENT WRONG THAT NIGHT, I THOUGHT I KNEW MY 8 NOW IM ALOT MORE CAUTIOUS AROUND CORNERS.

Simultaneous failure of two independent systems and their backups. Could have been an electromagnetic pulse.

SoCal - was there also a bright light? Or maybe you saw some trees turn negative and then disappear?

Of course, that wouldn't explain the differential - which is mechanical - locking up at the same time.

just a theory..

Loss of power, mechanical or electrical, can not and will not cause the braking and/or steering systems to "lock up" or otherwise become completely non-functional. Power loss is a very realistic failure mode and automotive engineers take steps to ensure a minimal level of functionality for that scenario. These are primarily mechanical systems that rely on power solely for assistance. Unless he forgot to remove this before driving: http://www.wolo-mfg.com/wb.htm, the story is BS -- the "locking differential" is the smoking gun.

brakes and power steering felt fine throughout, maybe if the power did briely cut, i would'nt have felt it on the steering but maybe the DSC was going to activate at that point but did'nt only later when it sensed it was in a slide, but was obviously too late. i have tested my cars capabilities on track days, skid pans etc... and know how much sliding can be done. b4 the DSC activates the DSC does give you more ''drifting'' capabilities compare to ASC. the 8 corrected its self and it was over quickly. dont know why it slid out in the 1st place, maybe i was going 2 fast? but we always went fast around that bend, we pretty much masterd the bends on our street. we were staying at that house 7 months, almost every day we enjoyed the bends. if the road was just abit wider for the delayed DSC. if if if, who knows... still keeps me thinking W.T.F.? i saw a pic on one of the threads with a silver 8 which was totalled in the front and a guy standing next to it, and had a text saying we live in a illusion.... ''i dont take corners as fast as i used to''
