most horsepower for your buck

racing beat air duct - $130
turbo xs catless header back - $500
cobb accessport - $700

should net you ~20whp.

If you can drop the tranny yourself

1. Lightweight Flywheel

2. Short Shifter

3. Accessport

wow, some of these recommendations are ridiculous.

How bout we start off with some simple mods:
- Racing Beat AC / Oil cooler screens. Your fancy schmancy coilover are going to mean SQUAT if your car is overheating because a rock took out your oil coolres.

- Short Shifter. (assuming you bought an M/T)

- Clear Corners. Those amber side markers are hideous

- does your car sit outside much? Get yourself a good car cover. (Noah cover craft)

- are you the original owner? Might be time to flush out all the fluids in preperation for summer. Your transmission, differential, and radiator will thank you later.

- What condition are your tires in?

lightweight clutch/flywheel/counter weight. That was my favorite mod and made a serious increase in acceleration through ought the whole RPM band. I got mine from BHR.

I seriously doubt this would give you more than 5-10. in other words, a hell of a lot of cash for something barely noticeable. Also, why the hell would you recommend changing the suspension? Ok, so you have a car with world renowned handling abilities....and the first thing you do is change the suspension? wtf? why? I have read reviews of rx8's with professionally upgraded suspensions which actually are outperformed by the stock 8 despite costing thousands extra.

I wouldn't 'seriously' doubt him making over 10hp - considering we don't know if the OP is running too rich or too lean or the condition of the OP's cat is in. Under optimal conditions he may gain up to 10 w/no cat and a decent tune but that always varies. Seeing what a good tune can do first hand at some of the dyno days MM and the BHR team have held, I realize doubting the possibilities of a decent gain isn't always out of the question.

On top of all that - the ap servers as more than just a 'power-adder' - which makes it truly worth it IMO.

AP is far more useful than the majority of the mods out there for the 8

the reviews you see are always for rx8s outfitted with mazdaspeed suspension or the bilsteins. the stock 03-07 suspension is soft and allows a lot of body roll. don't get me wrong, it handles great stock, but there's just too much play, imo. if you want to it to stick down around the turns, you have to upgrade or at least stiffen the suspension.

a lot of good suggestions here...a couple bad ones too...but wtf the op hasn't even answered the main question...form vs function. we can all spit out great mod after great mod, but seems like we're just talking amonst ourselves here unfortunately...
