Riley's Rx8 REW Swap

Can I first say that I had just been typing it up for a few months now waiting till I actually got a decent amount of content to start a post. Also disclaimer I am not an expert I'm just taking my time and taking it one problem at a time and as fast as funds allow. thanks for reading any input is appreciated.

Started in 2016 when I bought the Rx8. Daily drove the car for about 9 months then the modding ich started. At the same time I acquired a new great daily driver a Toyota minivan, great a reliable daily car. So over the next couple years I modified my Rx8. Basic mods intake, ignition system, exhaust, wheels, lots of suspension mods and cooling as well

So this brings us to summer of 2019 early summer start having issues with clutch (again), trans (synchro rings) and a misfire ends up being ESS. So I Dropped the trans and half the clutch was gone and I was sure the synchro rings and trans was going to go bye bye soon. At this time I was also wanting more power (go turbo) and with half the parts already out I decided to pull the engine.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...2a3e93e156.jpg
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...51135e65a2.jpg

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...3a919fbdc3.jpg

I then needed to think about what I wanted to do with the car turbo renny or rew. But to start i bought a jdm 5speed rx8 trans for 3 reasons figured no matter what route I go that trans Is usable, obviously no drive train modifications is needed and I got a killer deal. Well and I guess it's better than the shitty about to grenade 6 speed. So after a lot of thinking and going back and forth between options I decided I was going to go rew. Took some time and got the build planned. Did lots of research to find out what parts I would need, problems with the swap and solutions. In mid august 2019 still nervous I committed to the rew swap and got a completely stock 13b rew complete engine with low compression. Got a great deal on the engine and was going to rebuild anyway so the compression wasn't an issue.

Engine and trans showed up today. I have way too many transmissions haha. Tans in the middle is the new five-speed needs a little cleanup then should be good to go. Top is the old FD trans will be selling or binning along with the one on the bottom which is Rx8 six speed

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...65a05a4f60.jpg

Took apart the rew and now it's time for a rebuild. Plan on porting all new seals. Housing, rotors and irons as needed. Balancing the rotating assembly and oiling mods to be done as well. Just need to remove the fly wheel (we all know how fun the fly wheel nut can be) and oil pan and ready for shipping.

While saving funds and getting ready for the rebuild started to clean up the trans and did some mods in the engine bay. Removed all the corrosion, dirt and grime off of the trans and polished up looking good to start still got a little ways to go. I also did some shaving in the engine bay cut out Reny Motor mount points welded in the holes ground it smooth and repainted. Cut and welded some other things in the engine bay as well as repainted the front crossmember where the bumper bolts to. Removed the fly wheel and oil pan. Had a little bit of trouble with the fly wheel nut. Purchased the RB fly wheel nut wrench seamed like would make it easy boy was I wrong. Tried and tried with the wrench but no success. Frustrated I bit the bullet and bought a 54mm socket and slapped it on the impact. Fucker came right off should have done that first, oh well at least I got it off. Oh and thanks Milwaukee you make an amazing impact wrench. Removing the oil pan was business as usual.

October 2019 rebuild ready. Engine is to be shipped out soon. Shipping it to Banzai Racing in northern Indiana. Chose them because the are a very reputable rotary rebuilder and the are close to me in Wisconsin. Will be doing a complete rebuild no corners will be cut and a large street port. Hoping to get some brap brap at idle out of the large port but we will find out I guess. Also built the pallet for the 13b to sit on during shipping. Got a 2'x2.5' pallet from work screwed down a 1'x1.5 piece of plywood for the engine to sit on then nailed on the 2x6 support boards to hold it all in place was happy with the end result. Now time to start getting sub frame and turbo bits. More to come
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...35b283e43e.jpg

Got some parts today yay. Got the exhaust manifold, down pipe pieces and subframe engine mount was very happy with the quality of everything and all arrived very quickly and very safely wrapped Manifold is very nice beautiful welds and should do nice for the swap. Plan on wrapping it in manifold heat wrap and also plan on a turbo blanket to help with heat soak in the engine bay. Engine mount was just raw metal probably would have been fine but decided to paint it going with matte black as always primed it first that is the gray. Painted the black and beautiful paint job very happy. Installed the new engine mount after the paint dried of course. good to go centered and all bolts torqued.

Still waiting on the engine to be sent out for rebuild a little frustrating but I understand banzai racing was busy over the holiday season so decided to wait till after the first of January unfortunately. That what was worked for the shop and worked for me as well so better to wait. But all wrapped and strapped for shipping.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...0f7fb88e1b.jpg
Finished up the trans today. Got it all the corrosion off and it's all polished up. One of the sensors on the trans the wires where completely frayed and wasn't going to work. So since the RX8 five speed and FD trans are almost the same took sensor off the FD trans just had to change connectors. Thankfully the Rx8 trans and harness is just spade connectors so that made it easy crimped those on and good to go. Also purchased T4 turbo blanket and exhaust manifold wrap. Plan on using GT35r BB turbo. 68mm 84 trim 1.06AR T4 flange turbine side. 82mm 56 trim .70 compressor side. Basic turbo I guess but hopefully works good for my goals. After the purchase of the manifold wrap I was doing some reading and now I'm kind of skeptical on using it. Pros will reduce engine bay heat. exhaust scavenging? Cons exhaust manifold can become corroded from condensation and will basically melt it self from the inside out from too much heat because the wrap doesn't allow it to cool. Your guys thoughts on this any advice would like to keep heat down in the engine bay but don't want to damage manifold. Half wrap? Thanks more to come.

dannobre 01-07-2020 11:06 PM

If you keep the FD tranny you can swap the center section in if you blow up the 5 speed.... no sense binning it if it will be useful 😁

F***APiston 01-07-2020 11:24 PM

Yeah good point mate did not think about that will probably keep it then just trying to not take up to much space

Might be a dumb question, but does anyone ceramic coat just the inside of the exhaust manifold? Thought being to put an insulator between the hot gas and the metal. You would probably need to have some air circulation around the manifold to insure metal temperatures stay low (relatively speaking of course) during extended periods of WOT.

F***APiston 01-08-2020 09:00 PM

The way the manifold sits is low mount pipes sit down next to the oil pan was thinking the lower parts might get some airflow just from driving leave this part unwrapped to cool it some and wrap a little bit up top by the turbo just to help with engine bay heat soak. Just a thought don't know if it would work. The ceramicoat is the way to go though isn't it but spendy

Riley's Rx8 REW Swap Continued

After talking with Banzai racing got the rebuild figured out.

•Level 3-4 rebuild*
•Aggressive Street port*
•Omp block off/delete*
•Rear Oil return delete
•Super apex seals
•Pilot bearing*
•Painting included with rebuild but black for the irons silver for the housings

*Level 3-4 rebuild is Banzai's rebuild levels 4 is the highest once they receive the engine we will determine what level is needed. If you are curious what is included in the rebuild visit the banzai racing website
*Porting obviously will get some power but was mostly looking for the rough idle so hopefully we get a decent brap brap but I understand it still is only a street port.
*Going premix anyway so make it easy and painless just have them block it off.
*Pilot bearing is again just to make it easy on me so I don't have to buy the special pilot bearing puller.

Today is a good day. The engine shipped out to banzai racing earlier today so now time to save funds and wait for the engine. Also received the turbo blanket and manifold wrap. Turbo blanket is very nice and should work great. Wrapped the manifold a little bit just did the top. I don't know about it still may take it off. What do you guys think will it work to keep the manifold cooler but also reduce engine bay heat soak. Should I wrap the whole manifold leave it or take it off thoughts. More to come thanks.

I wrapped my entire manifold with header wrap and the first time I started the car a small oil leak sprayed down the header wrap..... Removed the header wrap and haven't looked back. Being able to see the color of your manifold can help you with any timing issues... Just my 2 cents...

Hope it all works out. I have had nothing but good interactions with Banzai....

F***APiston 01-13-2020 09:44 AM

Okay thanks for the info. Thinking I was going to take it off so great. Good to hear so far very happy with banzai.

Riley's Rx8 REW Swap Continued

Riley's REW Rx8. Continued.

Engine showed up at Banzai racing earlier this week. Engine is currently getting tore down and some pictures were sent to me. As mentioned before I purchased the engine used with low compression in the rear rotor. Unfortunately the engine was in rough shape with signs of overheating and/or oil starvation. Feeling disheartened about the situation. What should I have expected it was a used engine with low compression it wasn't going to be in perfect condition but was hoping it would be in better shape than it is currently. Aforementioned my goal was to not cut any corners on the engine build. I would still like to accomplish that. Based off of what Banzai suggests and what decisions I want to make this could get expensive hehe. So almost nothing was salvageable from the old engine which is unfortunate. I decided to bite the bullet and getting a new REW from Mazda then to have Banzai do the modifications that I wanted. Obviously quite a bit more expensive this way but like stated before I'm not going to cheap out on the engine build. So banzai should have the engine by next week and then probably 2-4 weeks until it's in my possession. Now it is just a waiting game for a while as my funds are drained after this engine hiccup. More to come slowly but surely.

Old engine tear down pics.

Wow, what the ... looks like somebody did a home build without knowing what they were doing.

strokercharged95gt 01-23-2020 06:32 AM

Lol did someone fill all the coolant channels with epoxy, or is that an optical illusion? That motor musta smoked like hell with the oil control rings in that condition.....

Probably a smart move scrapping that engine, if you buy all the parts individually it will cost more than new engine..

Looks like the rotors may be the only thing worth salvaging.

TeamRX8 01-23-2020 12:26 PM

I think it’s just the illusion of the rust coating on those surfaces. Must of been running 100% water, probably out of the city water faucet no less.

F***APiston 01-23-2020 01:49 PM

Yeah I don't know what the hell the previous owner did but I don't think they knew what they were doing but that's the risk I took getting a used engine. That's what I figured I wasn't going to risk using that engine and was way cheaper to just get a new one. No Epoxy like teamrx8 said just the rust and corrosion in the water jackets. Chris from Banzai said the front rotor was usable and the front iron. rear rotor and everything else was scrap.

TeamRX8 01-23-2020 02:11 PM

Well you did good with a new REW from Mazda. I was a bit shocked to see how low the racer net price was through Motorsports when they announced new inventory a while back.

Update

Has been a while since I posted but the but finally making progress in the build. Obviously received the engine from Banzai very happy with that. Mounted the manifold. Many parts on the way water pump, pulleys, waste gate, oilpan, and some adaptors and more One those parts arrive I will post some more pics and go into detail on what has been done. Thanks

F***APiston 05-19-2020 01:17 PM

Port matching the oil filter pedestal. I think it turned out great but is that enough should I do a little more or is that good. Just wanted a second opinion on it. top is picture from Banzai racing on what it should look like for comparison. Bottom two are is my pictures of the porting I did. Thanks guys.

you should get rid of that entirely and instead use the Chip’s Motorsport oil pedestal adapter and a remote filter mount.

F***APiston 05-20-2020 10:35 AM

Really okayi will take a look. is doing the porting a problem works fine right was just trying to save a little money and it's easy enough especially since it's bolts right up other wise

MaD666MaX 05-20-2020 12:27 PM

I have a forcefed pedestal that fits perfect on the block in rx8

Give them a call

TeamRX8 05-20-2020 05:47 PM

hey sorry, forgot this is an REW. The link I gave you was for the Renesis, which is different. I wasn’t getting why you were modding it like that, but now it makes sense. There are a bunch of different pedestals for the REW, the main thing imo is getting the filter somewhere easier to access and providing more hot airflow out of the engine bay.

F***APiston 05-21-2020 09:26 AM

Yeah this is a rew swap kinda figured that wouldn't fit once I looked it up. Mad max the force feed fits the rew block in the Rx8 chassis?

yes it fits perfectly and its designed for this application

i cant find a picture of the part alone right now but basicly it replaces the oem pedestal with a 1 outlet -10 fitting. It well made and has a o ring

heres a pic of it installed

Sweet thanks will take a look at it. Only concern is running oil cooler lines no port for that on it

No, they make one for the REW too, it’s just a bit different. They’re are a lot of other options for the REW though, but not on the Reni. Here is the REW version, but I’m not sure if it fits on the RX8 chassis:

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...57a889264.jpeg

pretty sure the one on Max’s engine has a port, just not seeing it at that angle or they may offer it as an option.

MaD666MaX 05-21-2020 08:19 PM

The -10 outlet goes to filter then oil coolers

the chips one might not fit on rew in rx8

TeamRX8 05-22-2020 01:29 PM

yeah, you might be right about that. I forgot the clearance is an issue. It doesn’t seem that tall though.

so the question is, will the Renesis oil filter pedestal that he modified fit then?

I used Forcefed part as well, I think there is a pic in my build thread, if not PM me and I'll send you one. Don't think they advertise it on their website or anything, I just emailed them and got it. Oil flow should basically replicate stock REW even with the single port adapter. My memory is foggy on this but something like this: oil flow through coolers, to filter, to adaptor where it then splits to bearings and sump. Don't forget to plug rear turbo drain on passenger side for the stock twin turbo.

Edit: here are before and after photos of mine, oil will just split at the engine block.

From my knowledge and research I've done it will fit as long as you port match the hole and it's the easiest because it bolts right up and can run oil lines like factory but I will do some more research and take a look at the parts you guys recommended. Thanks for all the input and help. Update coming soon got a lot of parts in just waiting on oil pan to show up the engine should be going in.

The problem is you'll never reach the oil filter there in that location. The REW sits too tight to the firewall and the intake elbow will be right over top of it. Make life easier for yourself and relocate oil filter. Just my 2 cents.

TeamRX8 05-25-2020 10:53 AM

yeah, the thing I see missing is that you have to remote mount a filter regardless and rather than reuse the RX8 filter mount with an adapter cap as per the thread below you just get rid of all that and go straight to a remote adapter mount instead

https://www.rx8club.com/rotary-swaps...nstall-257641/

in this thread it seemed to me that Banzai didn’t recognize that the pedestal adapter (the same one Max posted here) connects the two ports together. You don’t have to separate them the OE way, because that way sends unfiltered oil back to the regulator/oil pan.

.

Riley's REW Swap continued

Received my oil pan today from nicon rotary also received turbo water pump housing and pump and lots of other parts. engine can finally start going together in the next couple weeks and will be in the car soon to start test fitting everything I have. A few things I have got done nothing big as I have been just collecting parts and waiting. Port matched the oil pedestal made gasket for that as well. Will still most likely switch to remote filter but not my major concern at the moment will figure that out when the time comes also drilled and tapped turbo for 1/8 npt fitting for a boost reference point to wastegate. The Nikon rotary oil pan uses the RX8 oil pick up tube made that fit on with adapter plate also made gasket. More to come very soon very excited to finally see it coming together and the engine in the car. Thanks. Oh also any one know where I can find this dust cover part (first picture). Had an old one from the other engine but got damaged.

You made the adapter plate or did you buy it from somewhere? I noticed the rx8 oil pickup tube does not line up with the REW and I would like to retain the rx8 pickup as it's low profile. I took the metal spacers out of the rx8 pickup and it will line up just barely but not perfectly. If you made this, please walk me through your thought process is please.

F***APiston 06-10-2020 08:18 PM

My adapter plate came with my oil pan from Nicon rotary. I modified mine slightly to make it fit better in my opinion. You probably can buy one from Nicon rotary. Wouldn't be hard to make though. Mine is only about 1 to 1.5 inches thick and would involve drilling three holes in some aluminum and cutting it out. Use the rew factory tube as template. Also you do need to punch out the metal bushing/spacer on the I Rx8 pick up tube for it to fit. Also spacing may be different for factory rew oil pan mine is what is needed for the aftermarket oil pan.

I use the Banzai low profile oil pan, they provide the hardware to mount the rx8 pickup tube onto the REW front iron plate. Should be just two studs, 2 washers, and 2 nuts. I was able to leave the factory rx8 pickup tube alone. Not sure why yours is fitting so weird.....

would’ve preferred taking a die grinder and slotting the holes in the metal bushings rather than removing them entirely.

apparently Banzai discontinued that oil pan ...

Same for me.

And yes it's no longer available on their website unfortunately.

Engine just about ready to be put in. Installed Rx8 oil level sensor, sealed and mounted oil pan. Engine mount was put and manifold was installed again after have to remove it for the v band to be welded on the waste gate dump. Will be putting engine in tomorrow and will install waste gate, turbo and down pipe for test fit will also possibly install water pump and pulleys.

Had to take a quick picture. Turbo looks so good.

a bit old school, but nice.

Riley's REW Swap continued

Engine is in. Test fitting everything. Very happy finally feeling like things are coming together. Have a few clearance issues but overall everything seems like a good fit. Issues with oil drain plug will move that to the other side as it is hitting the manifold. Also return to the water pump where the lower radiator hose goes on is hitting steering rack. Turbo fits fine as does the down pipe and waste gate. Put on FFE idler pulley but that's right in front of the turbo inlet. Would like to keep it on but obviously that isn't going to work so is water pump pulley contact an issue. Put the the Rx8 oil pedestal seems like it would fit but we will see once the intake is on. Also got a inspection plate cleaned it up and primed it. Painting it in black high temp paint as it sits close to manifold and waste gate. Just going to collect more parts for now still need intake manifold, fuel system, flywheel, pressure plate, clutch, oil coolers and everything for plumbing and wiring. Thanks.

Water pump inlet can just be cut off, flipped 180deg and welded back on to clear the steering rack. See post #113 on my thread for photos. https://www.rx8club.com/rotary-swaps...-270137/page5/

F***APiston 06-17-2020 02:21 PM

Sweet thanks man. was thinking that I would end up cutting it and making it fit but glad to hear that it works. thanks mate.

I got the xcessive lower intake manifold and the ffe primary fuel rail. I have a question about the fuel system. I am looking for 300-400 hp for this build probably right around 350 to the wheels would be perfect. Planned on getting 850 primary injectors. My question is about the secondary fuel set up on the xcessive lim there are four ports for secondary injectors is it beneficial to use all four injector ports at like a 1650 sized injector with ffe four port injector rail meant for the xcessive lim or block off the middle two ports (block off kit included with the manifold) and just run the two injectors like factory at let's say a 1750 or 1800 injectors with ffe two port secondary rail. Sizing wise is that right on or a little overkill is fine with me hopefully would bring injector duty cycle down. One more thing is pump size would a Walbro 255 be good for that would like to keep an intank pump and run with FPR or should I go up on fuel pump size Walbro 450 or do you guys have a recommended pump thanks a lot for any input hope all is well.

dannobre 08-11-2020 06:38 PM

A 255 would be a little small... there are some nice new brushless pumps by TI

Personally I would pick injectors to use 2 Primary and 2 Sec injectors and then if I decided to upgrade I would add the 2 in the Pri runners on the Xcessive manifold

If you have the funds buy good injectors.... New Bosch type like the ID ones work well and have good spray patterns compared to the older style injectors

What are you using for an ECU? That will determine what you can do with injectors as well...

F***APiston 08-11-2020 08:19 PM

Ecu going to use the adaptronic modular for the Rx8 seems like the best option. Okay so two primary and two secondary injectors sizing 850 primarys and 1750 secondarys seems like a good size. Great thanks I will check out the ti brushless pumps. Yes definitely planned on getting good injectors the injector dynamics or Bosch ev14 injectors definitely willing to spend the money for high-quality products for this swap. Thanks for your input man.

F***APiston 08-12-2020 11:05 AM

I thought the Rx8 Lim didn't fit for a rew swap. I'm assuming the s2 manifold is about the same as the s1 Rx8 manifold size wise. I already have the xcessive manifold so no point in trying to change now but just curious does the Rx8 lim fit my knowledge and research was that it would not work with rew

The S2 engine is fairly fubar, but not on those points.

On a REW?
