What would you expect to pay for a demo rx8? Should I even bother?
I have my eyes set on a particular 2006 shinka (w/ spoiler, spare tire) RX8, but it's a demo with 3k miles on it. I'm assuming the car has been driven very very rough in that period, so I would expect a large discout on it.
I got an over-the-phone quote of $28,599, which I personally think is way overpriced. I was thinking I could work the price down to 23-24k with some effort, but this is my first experience with buying a demo car.
Is that a decent price to shoot for, or Should I go lower?
Are the potential future problems big enough that I should just avoid buying a demo?
I have no problems walking away from this deal if they don't hit the pricetag I want. So if someone can offer a few tips on what a "good deal" would be on this demo, it would be very helpful
Thanks!

You could probably talk that down to 24k-25k. Usually on a demo you can get about 8k off sticker, depending on vehicle. In this case, probably not that much, but from what I've heard from the deals people are getting on new RX-8s, you should be able to get a nice chunk off sticker.
Not usually any problems with buying a demo, it some cases it's a good idea as the little things that can go wrong with a brand new vehicle have already been addressed so it should be good to go.

I personally hate the whole demo concept so you'll see a strong bias against it in my writing.
If you're serious about negotiating for it be sure to throw in their face the fact that "THIS IS A USED CAR!"
Seriously, pretend you're buying it from me. I used it as a part-time car, tell you I took good care of it and here it is one year old and 3,000 miles on it. Now what's it worth to you? Run the Edmunds numbers on the quote for such a used car.
Don't let the dealership tell you what a great discount this is on a brand new car. It's not. It's a used car and it ought to be priced like one.
I was highly insulted by a dealership that offered me a "great deal" because they "really wanted to move this car" and still didn't drop down to Invoice price. I didn't buy that car - I didn't even talk to that dealership again and I don't take the RX-8 I did buy there for service.
You want a number? How about 30% off MSRP or better. If the Edmunds reports for a used car with that mileage come out really low I'd say take those into the dealership and use those to back up your position.
...and, as always, don't be afraid to walk away.

Being a rotary engine...I would steer away from any "demo." The car was likely abused with the tester taking it hard. I doubt that the engine was properly warmed up before it was abused. And..from talking to the service guys, most problems arise from people who don't break-in their vehicle properly. I am assuming that the demo was not...so...if you want to save $$, that is kewl, just be aware that you might have "issues" with the car as it gets older...

Being a demo just means a salesman drove it for a while...doesn't mean it was beat up. And technically to the banks and other financing institutions a car is not "Used" unless it has more than 5,000 miles....
If the demo hasn't been used as a loaner car, it's probably in good shape. If it's not taken care of the sales person or manager is held accountable. Now, if it was a loaner, that's a whole different story...but seeing as this is an RX-8, that is most likely not the case. They probably use 3's and 6's as loaners....
But, then again you do have those out there that drive fast, so it was probably driven hard at times, hehe. That's why we have warranties .

I bought a demo vehicle.
It's a 2005 (I bought it early this year) Rx-8 that had 5922 miles on it. I had a mechanic look over the car, interviewed the guy who drove it (the dealership GM), and made a list of everything wrong with the car.
The car had:
GT package (black leather, front brake upgrade, bose system, etc)
Appearance Package
Spoiler
Spare Tire
Rotary Accent
All Weather Floor Mats
6 CD changer
I paid 27k after tax. I couldn't haggle too much. It was the only Black/Black GT within 150 miles at the time. Still, thats 1600 at least under what you are looking at. I had no real qualms buying the car. I don't think there is much of a chance that the GM drives harder than I do. After 11k miles, I have yet to have a single problem. Oh, they also agreed to extend my warrantee 6k miles (whick is moot b/c I'll never make it that high with an intact warrantee).

I bought a 2006 shinka for 26,750. The dealership owner's wife had been driving it. The car was spotless. It was sold to me as new with full warranty. If your demo has been rednecked
maybe pass But if it's clean and has full warranty...go for it.

Wrong on one count (nothing personal) - being a demo doesn't just mean a salesman drove it. Someone drove it - I'd try to find out who.
In my case, the demo I drove and passed on was driven by, ready for this, the dealership GM's *son*. Yeah, and 'sonny-boy' forgot to clean up the latte that sloshed in the cup-holder. I'm sure the boy was taking *great* care of that car.
We had another user on this board who claimed to be 17 years old or so, claimed his dad owned/managed a dealership and claimed he'd been driving his dad's demo cars since he was 14. Nice, that's exactly what I want to buy (*not*).
Now, that's not to say all demo cars are trashed. My point is just that a buyer should command a steep discount when doing a dealership the favor of taking one of their demo cars off their books due to the uncertainty.

Thanks for all the tips
I've decided I'm going to ride out the winter season in my current car, and if it's still in their lot next spring, make a move on it.

One more data point on "non-new" RX-8s. Our local giant new & used car retailer, Simmons-Rockwell, has two 2004s on their lot for $17,999 each. One yellow, one red. They seem to have a pretty steady stream of them at that price (I've seen more yellows, blues and blacks come and go from that lot).
I dunno if you're hung up on a Shinka or really want low-mileage, but the much cheaper, higher mileage RX-8s are a possible alternative. At the very least you could print the listings off Simmons-Rockwell.com and try to use them as bargaining power. A dealer would never match the price of high mileage 2004s with a lower mileage Shinka, but he may go a little lower if he actually believes you'll consider picking up one of those cheaper cars if you can't get the price you like on his Shinka.

What I really want is a Red GT with red/black interior, but there are none within 150 miles of me (Rochester, NY) as far as I can tell. I really really like the copper red though, so I'd be willing to give up the red/black interrior in order to get copper red.
I'd definatly consider a 20-30k mile car if I knew the owner took good care of it.

I worked with a salesman named Paul at the Horseheads lot last fall and this summer to buy cars for my wife and I. In both cases he was really helpful, but I couldn't buy from him because he didn't have the right cars for us in inventory.
I'd say keep searching farther and wider. I went all the way to Maryland to get mine. John Holtz, Vincent and Ontario Mazda just didn't have what I wanted.

I don't think with any demo, whether it's got 500 miles or 5000, that one would be able to ascertain the exact manner it was driven. Interview the supposed person who "drove" it, question all the salesmen...nobody will ever admit as to how much the car was flogged. And there could have literally been tens and tens of customers who test drove it. I'd think that the more miles the greater the chance it was beat on.
But, if that's all your budget allows I agree with previous posters that said treat it as a used car. If people here are getting new '06 Shinkas for, say $6500 off MSRP, then maybe offer another 15% below that because of the fact the car is no longer "in the wrapper".

If I wait till 2008, I'll be able to afford a factory-ordered one. I may end up doing that if I don't feel comfortable with any of the pre-owened / demo deals I find.
