What are my chances?

I'm looking to purchase a new 04 RX-8 w/ 6spd tranny and the touring package, no extras other than that. Dealer in voice is $27,588 (including destination), but I want to see if I can get it for $26,500 including tax/title/tags. I'm currently deployed over seas (I'm Navy) but I'll be looking to purchase sept/oct timeframe (obviously at the end of the month for more negotiating leverage). I'm hoping the dealerships will be more desparate to get the 04's off the lot to make room for the 05's. What do you guys think my chances of succeeding are? Oh, also, I'm located in Norfolk, VA so if anyone in VA can recommend a good dealership to work with, please let me know! My email's renked@ross.navy.mil, so send me your opinions, tips, comments, etc.!!!! Thanks so much!!!!

You should be able to. I bought one last week(6spd, touring package, spare tire) for 27,500. That was 400 below invoice. But much will depend on availibilty. You would be buying at time where the stock of 04's will be drying up(05's already arriving at some dealerships). You may have to compromise on color, or get one that has a couple options not on your list. BTW, the 27500 I paid didnt include tax, tags. Good luck.

I'm not sur eyou can get it for $1000 below *invoice*, including tax/title/tags. That means that the dealer eats another $2000 or so in Virginia. That's $3000 below invoice - not very likely to happen. You have to be a hell of a negotiator. Good luck though. Check out the Mazda dealer on Military Highway south of 264, they had a few 8's there in May when I was on TDY in Norfolk. Another one on VA Beach Blvd. in Virginia Beach. Best of luck, hope it works out for you, but they prey on servicemen, you better watch out.

Here is a post I am actually qualified to respond to. It will be a little lengthy but I want to give you all the information.

I am in the car business and have been for about 8 years. I am in the Atalnta market which is VERY competative. We have about 5 Mazda dealers in the Metro area and pretty much all of them are big. The first thing to do is find the dealer with the LARGEST stock of 8's around. The reason being is the 8 is thier highest priced vehicle and they are paying floor plan percentages to the bank on every one of them, so they are VERY incentivised to move them. Secondly, DO NOT go to a sales person, his job is to work you for the most gross profit possible and even if you do get him down to a good price it will take quite a bit of energy. If the dealer is of any size at all it will have a "fleet" department. Now, Mazda does not deal fleet on the dealer level so this department basically is the no gross department that sells to brokers and rental companies. They are very easy to work and won't give you the run around. They get payed on volume, so profit does not matter to them ( to an extent) Third, know exactly what you want and be all business, make sure they know you are serious and that you will buy the car right then. Here is what you have to negotiate with. Dealers look at everything in "triple net" that is cost of the vehicle minus incentives, minus hold back (3% of MSRP for Mazda) let them make a few hundred dollars over that and you will get the best possible deal. Also, ensure you have your financing arranged through your own source prior to going in there, that way you have a negotiating point. Do not buy ANY back end products form the F&I guy, they will try to make up for the lack of profit on the front end. Jim Ellis Mazda is the Big dog here in Atlanta and will ship out of state for you. I can hook you up with a guy there if you like. BTW they have about 60 8's on the ground right now!
