Went to dealer to buy oil for car.

Since my car was in shop for a CEL, when I went to pick it up I stopped by the parts department to buy a few quarts of oil. You won't believe what they told me.
"We don't sell oil to the consumer after all it only costs 20.00 dollars for an oil change".

I almost wet myself from laughing so hard, I had to remind the parts guy per their own owners manual the RX-8 does burn oil (granted not a quart every 1000 miles).

This guy then call a service rep over who again quotes to me the 20.00 dollar oil change.

I am going tonight to local auto parts store to pick up a few quarts of oil.

Yikes, time for you to find a new dealership!

At that price they should include the oil. What they are saying is they are going to charge $20.00 for labor ....

$20.00 for labor ... on an oil change that takes 15 minutes or less!

Yup go to another dealer pronto!

The best is since I took the 500 Debit card they can charge whatever they want for my free oil changes.

just to clarify. $20.00 is the cost including parts and labor. most dealers do not sale oil because they use it in bulk. we have a HUGE oil container we use with oil lines to all techs stalls. it would not make sense for us to buy oil in bottles when we use so much, it is cheaper for us to buy it in bulk. so we do not sale oil to customers in bottles.

so what he could have done was pull around to a service bay and kindly ask them to top it off for him and they might have done it for free since he bought the car there and knowing the free service was coming soon anyway. build a relationship with your service guys and they will treat you right.

How much oil are you using? I have over 2000 miles on my car and I am running fine.

Ahh I see, I misunderstood the post. Its not that the dealer is not including oil for the $20.00, its that they dont sell the individual bottles.

I feel like a dummy. :o

Thanks for the clarification.

I have not had to add any oil yet since I just broke 700 miles. I just find it ironic that Mazda North America does not realize that the owners manual suggests you buy your oil from them.

I beg to differ. Now that you do sell the RX-8, it would make since for you to sell the oil in quarts since the owner needs to top it off every month or so.

It would be a hassle to have to go to the dealer to get topped off everytime. I am just buying another brand and everyonce and awhile I will swing by the dealer if needed

About every 500 miles - the level hasn't changed since I bought the car. I know the engine burns some, but the car isn't burning any that I can tell.

Guys, buy your oil from Wal-Mart, not the dealer.

Lightbulb

Dealers buy their oil in 55 gal drums. They won't have a few each qts around to sell. You get free maint right, have they top it off or bring a container in. Ask them what brand they use and match it. I have to bring mine in for its first change Sat at 1000 miles. I am going to pick up a MP3 player while I am there. My dealer said he would match the texas price $260 dollars.
