Want to know if you're getting a good price? Use this spreadsheet.
Want to figure out if your price is in the correct ballpark for your car? Attached to this post is a Excel spreadsheet that contains pricing information for almost 200 different sales over the past several years. The spreadsheet should be pretty straightforward to understand. I used this to buy my car, and it helped me a lot since dealer prices are very inflated.
Information comes from a variety of sources: the "What was your closing price?" thread in this forum, eBay, and Craigslist ads.
Comments/assumptions made in this spreadsheet
--------------------------------------------------------------
- Shinka edition cars are listed as Grand Touring models
- Only navigation is considered as a standalone option. Other options like spoiler, appearance, performance were not considered due to inconsistent quality of data.
- If a car was sold as new (first owner), then mileage is listed as 0 even though some of these cars have light use on them already
- Asking price is equivalent to the price the dealer lists on the lot for both new and used cars
- Close price is always listed before fees and taxes. If only OTD price was listed, I rounded down and fudged the amount.
- On that same note, not everything here is precise, and a lot of numbers are slightly rounded
- If no closing price is listed, that means I only saw the advertisement
Tips
---------------------------------------------------------------
- Use the dropdown arrows at the top of the page to narrow down the selection to the options/mileage/etc that you want.
- The spreadsheet is useful, but keep it hidden. If you show it to a salesperson while trying to negotiate, you'll only end up discussing whether or not these numbers are accurate instead of the price of the car you want. You end up wasting a lot of time (first-hand experience).
- RX8 club prices are the most accurate. While I tried to only show comparable cars on eBay (non-salvage, non-flood), eBay prices seem to be on the low end. There are a lot of possible explainations for this- there might be scams, there might be hidden repair costs, or I failed to notice that a car was salvaged. I've left eBay and Craigslist on this spreadsheet since the data is still useful to know.
- Location is not taken into account. Remember, prices will vary by where you live, so do not consider this spreadsheet to have all the answers.
- If you buy a car after using this spreadsheet, don't forget to post in the "closing price" thread. I'll try to keep this attachment up to date.
Car #179 is my new baby. Many, MANY thanks to all of you who posted prices before I did. You probably all saved me a couple thousand dollars. Happy hunting!
