Used car, open recall, multiple owners?

I`m looking to purchase a 2004 Rx-8 from Carmax but found some interesting facts about the car I recently had shipped.

1. Carmax told me its a 1-owner vehicle , I checked through a
carfax report and it shows up as 3 owners.

a)1st owner - shows from 2004-2006 with 9000 miles.
b)2nd owner - shows from 8/2007 with 12000 miles.
c) 3rd owner - shows from 10/2008 with 16900 miles, then 20k in dealer inventory for sale.

2. This car also shows with open Recall # 4206F VOLUNTARY EMISSION RECALL

I`ve read that the recalls will be no problem to get repaired through a mazda dealer. My intentions are to bring the car to the mazda dealer and get the compression test when they do the emission recall. I will have 30 days with the warranty from carmax to inspect the car. I was excited about the low mileage but after reading the forums here found that low mileage could be good/bad and decided to do the carfax. I originally decided to purchase from carmax to have the peace of mind that I would be getting a solid car. Is there any reason why it might show up as multiple owners on carfax when carmax says its a 1-owner vehicle?

FYI - $15,595 - 20,270miles, car is a 2004 Red w/black leather, GT fully loaded, appearance pack,chrome oem rims. Confirmed with Mazda USA that this was the way it was shipped.

the open recall from 3 years ago...? the fact that the car was neglected by not 1, or 2, but all 3 owners...

you'd also be worried about that recall not being performed if you knew what it entailed ... if the car was EVER taken to a dealer why they didn't take care of it?

BTW, if you decide to take it, you've got 5 days to return it, no questions asked. I highly recommend you get it to a mazda dealer in that time span and have them look over it.

vin=xxxxx

I haven't purchased the car yet but I paid 400$ for the car to be shipped. When I originally decided on the car the sales rep confirmed that it was a single owner. The owner history is also interesting, 2nd owner had it for a little over 1 year and put only 3000 miles. 3rd owner had it for 2 months and added 3000 miles. I may just need to burn the shipping cost and look elsewhere. I might try to bring this up with the carmax rep also to see if I can get a refund if I decide on looking elsewhere.

Btw, thanks for your comments, information and users on this forum are great.

Don't ever listen to the Sales Consultants on the previous owners thing- did you look at the vehicle history report for it that's linked from the car page? You should have been able to tell right from that about how many owners it had, or at least how many times it was registered. Do you have the CarMax stock number(not the VIN) for it?

Unfortunately, I can pretty much guarantee you you're not going to get the transfer money back. So if you don't want to eat that, you could probably just get it checked out by Mazda to make sure it's okay. Aside from that emissions recall, which I don't remember being a huge deal, it doesn't really raise any red flags. Several previous owners probably just means it went through a normal owner or two before being sold back to a dealership or CarMax (which count as owners too, I beleive).
