Update on new '04 purchase
Okay guys, so if you've read my previous posts at https://www.rx8club.com/purchasing-financing-insurance-56/thinking-purchasing-new-04-a-63025/ , you know that I'm trying to get one of the 5 '04s that this dealer has on its lot. I'm off work today, and I took a drive over to the dealerhip to take another test-drive and hopefully get some kind of reasonable offer from them. So, I took the silver one out again, and I'm even more excited about it than before. The salesguy and I then sat down to discuss some numbers. Of course the manager came over to talk to me, and of course the finance guy came over and told me that they're not interested in my money... and that I could just take the car home today. Yeah... well I had no intention on driving it out today because I'm waiting for a check from my home refinance.
I was prepared to do a little haggling today though, and all I wanted was some kind of offer besides the $4000 off that Mazda's already giving me. Now, I'm not exactly sure who I'll be financing through just yet (my credit union or Mazda), but they didn't seem to want to really deal with me until I knew this. But before I left, he said that I was pretty much looking at that price as the bottom line (around $31K). Of course, there's no way in hell I'll settle for this price, or anything over $27K for that matter.
Any suggestions about how I should go about getting the price down more? This would be my first time negotiating a car deal and I'm just not quite sure what kinds of things I should say, or not say. I put a little money down to hold the car, but this just means they'll take it around back, off the main lot. If someone else comes by and wants to buy it, they can still take it from me. I appreciate any opinions or help with my next step. Thanks everyone!

Thanks... yeah I do always have the option of just walking. I'm having a hard time finding the invoice price for an a new '04 though. But for a car that sold for $35K MSRP last year, wouldn't invoice only be a few thousand less? Mazda is already giving me 4K off of it, but the car is also 2 1/2 years old (the silver one was assembled in Nov '03). So would there be an "adjusted" invoice price for leftover '04 models with the discount? Most sites just seem to show prices for the '05s, which I really can't use.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Wow that's pretty bad. Is this a 6-speed? Because invoice on the 04's was around $25,000 for the 6-speed, even less for auto. Add to that the packages they have (I think GT package invoice is around $3500). And you always have the fact that the car is 2 1/2 years old working for you. Forget that $4000 rebate, you should get way more than that just because the car is that old. These dealerships need to get 05's off the lot before the 06's come out. you should be able to steal an 04. There's a dealership by me offering over $12K off an '04 RX-8 6-speed, of course you have to take that specific one, but there are similar savings on '04s. I think the price was around $17500.

6 spd + sport package is minimum i would get.. that'd be about 23k with all the incentives right now, a loaded gt no more than 25k. Stick taxes and such on there, and that's the absolute highest I'd go for an 04.

Just to reiterate guys, this is an '04 6-speed, fully loaded with the GT package, appearance package, rotary accents, rear spoiler, 6-disc CD, spare tire kit and NAV. Oh, and it has approx. 140 miles on it. I haven't even begun to haggle with them yet because for some reason they want to know how I'll be financing it first.
ZoomZoomH: This is Perry Hall Mazda on Belair Rd. The only real reason I went there is because I knew they had all those '04s still left on the lot. They're actually a very small dealership and they do not have nearly the stock of other lots around Baltimore.

Considering that it has Nav, spare tire, and rotary accents, I'd raise what I said from $22K to $24K after rebate at the absolute most. But definitely no more. There were plenty of GTs going for $24K 3-4 months ago, no reason why you couldn't get at least the same price for GT+Nav now.

Well the car is 1.5 years old, not 2.5. Trying to get 4k below invoice price, plus a $4k rebate seems like a tall task, and impossible to me. The invoice for car you are looking to buy is close to the $32k range. I'm basing this off my RX8, which had msrp of $35849, and invoice was $32574. So 4k off Msrp comes out to about 1k below invoicem which is a definite RIP OFF. You should try offering $30k for car plus rebate I'd tell them that car is only worth that amount., and you won't pay close to $31k for it. In reality it is, because the moment you drive it off lot, it's only worth about 24-25k, since it's technically not in the new car class anymore. You'll know right away if they have any intention of selling car for $5-6k below invoice. The truth is, that people getting deals like that are in a different arear with different prices. it simply will not work for everyone. Also, people exxagerate their prices as well. I'd build an 05 with exact features and use that as invoice, and work it form there. Good luck!!

Yeah, I can't imagine the dealer accepting a 23-24K offer for this car. And you're right - it IS 1.5 years old. Still, I do think I could ask for $26K at MOST without being laughed at. I'll post updates as they happen!
Thanks to everyone for the tips!

As a sidenote, there are 4 other 04's on the lot with more miles on them than the silver one. I was initially interested in a black one, but it has over 400 miles on it! And the salesguy keeps insisting that they are NEW cars! I hope that idea is not engrained because the only thing "new" about them is that they've technically never been owned.
This is why I was going to just buy a slightly used one from private seller, or from Carmax. I just can't stand the BS that streams from these dealers.

This sounds just like my car except I don't have the rotary accents but I do have the strakes. I had a trade but my final price for the car would have been $25,900. They gave me $5,000 trade and the difference was 22,700, however they had first offered 3,200 for the car and it was probably trade in valued at 3,500. So however you cut it. That was March 26,2005. I am sure some have gotten a little better deal and others not as good. So I would say if you can get for $25,000 to 26,000. You should be able to get at least 8,000 of sticker without even dealing much. Good luck.

Well, equipped with all my research and advice from everyone here, I headed off to the dealer today with the intention to buy. I even had a check for them (the amount of which I didn't disclose exactly) so they knew that I meant business.
The first offer from them was around $30K. This is about $5000 off the MSRP. But really, it was just the $4000 off that Mazda gave them, plus another $1K because I was a "referral". When I rejected that, the sales guy asked me how much I was willing to spend. I told him that I'd sign tonight if they could do it for $26.5K. Now I know that's higher than some here have suggested... but I think it was a fair price for a car that I really, really want. Oh, and I also reminded him of the owner loyalty discount that I was due. So he went over and talked to his manager, who promptly came over to talk with me. He basically said that he could not possibly go lower than about $29.3K(!), and that other dealerships in the area keep calling him and offering invoice for his '04s. I was about to call BS on him, but I bit my tongue and thanked him for his time.
I just don't get it. He didn't try to haggle with me, or stop me from leaving. He must really be deluded about the value of these cars. He has my information if he wants to call me in a couple days, but the feeling I got is that he was not going to budge one bit. Incredibly disappointing, and even a little infuriating that they wouldn't even haggle with me. Guess they don't want my business - I'll be looking elsewhere.
Any thoughts?
