A special price for a special order?
Hi guys, it's been weeks and I've talked to most dealers in my area about getting a special order since they can't find an exact spec car, but the lowest I was offered was $31,950, MSRP is $33,705 (w/ dest.). Dealers would offer between $29,000-$30,000 for an off-the-lot car.
The specs are: Whitewater Pearl 2006 GT Manual and NAV, that's all.
You guys think they can go any lower? Or do you think that's a good "special price" and I should accept it? I don't want to, really.
I still don't get why the price has to be so different from a "lot" car. I have to wait up to 4 months for the car to come in, can't they at least lower it a little more? I wish I could get a special order price for $30,000 at the most, that be kewl with me because that would help a little, to pay for my ~9-10% interest rate, $1,000/6 months car insurance ($1000 deductable, full conv.), $800 snow tires, first month payment, etc. Starting out sure is hard. It's funny how a co-worker told me "ALL" cars have all-season tires, he didn't understand why this car would have summer tires, lol, I kept telling him, it's a "SPORTS" car. 
In any case, let me know if I'm talking crazy. It's been 4 weeks of searching, calling, emailing, and I'm getting burned out here.

It doesn't cost the dealer anything more to order a car. In fact, they don't have to pay extra for the car sitting on the lot.
The ONLY reason the dealers want you to buy something off the lot is because the longer the car sits on the lot, the less money they make off it. By the end of the model year, they get rid of them, even at a loss. They just write it off.
I wouldn't pay more than $100 over dealer invoice + any special incentives.

I can't even fathom paying $28k+ for that car in light of the phenomenal prices people were getting on 05's AND the declining sales (40%+ this year).

The 2005s don't reflect reality. Dealers lose money as the car sits on the lot because the cars are "on loan". By the end of the year they must move them, and so they just write off the loss. The cars are being sold for less than they paid for them. You can't expect or demand that a dealership sell you a car for under what they paid. That simply isn't going to happen.
With declining sales they will produce less RX-8's, this will even things out and stop the price from dropping (since it's not as urgent that they move so many units).

I believe that order cars are quoted without incentives, due to the fact that the dealer does not know what if any incentives will be in place at the time the car arrives. You would get any incentives on the RX-8 that Mazda has in place at time of purchase. I believe that current incentive is $1,500. If the incentive is the same or higher (possible lower) at time of purchase this would be subtracted from the $31,950.
I feel really bad, I really wanted the car. It's was my dream car and I've wanted it to be perfect. The car is perfect, but the special price doesn't fit me well. Maybe next year I'll probably be able to pay that special price for one.
In the meantime, I'm getting a regular '06 WRX. I've always wanted a Subaru. At least I won't have to drive my RX-8 in the snow, whenever I get it!
