Rotary is bad?

I have been considering a RX8, but I have heard that rotary engines are not the most reliable. Also I have heard myths about people having to replace these type of engines frequently. Is this true? I test drove a VW GLI and I was surprised. Please feel free to post all sorts of consumer reports stating why rotary is dependable and vise versa. Like my profile states I'm seeking the truth. I don't need you to convince me one way or the other. Please welcome me to your site by giving me lots of feedback. Just to clarify my commute to work is less than 3 miles. I WANT TO HAVE FUN WHEN I DRIVE! PLEASE REPLY!

Sounds like you shoudl get a VW.... have fun replacing window motors, speakers, radios... basically anything electric on the car.

OK, that's the standard RX8 club welcome. The people that are happiest with the car, sit in the drivers seat, drive it around th eblock, and decide they can't buy anythign else. It is a car that is finicky in nature, and will require additional attention to remain faithgully runnign for years on end. If you are concerned, avoid 04 models as they have the highest mileage and are most prone to engine failure as it was the first year of the Renesis engine.

YOu will not have more fun driving a car then this for anywhere near the cake... I will promise you that. The Driver-Car-Road interraction is unparrallelled in this price range.

No offense but I'm not about to go scurrying around all over the internet doing the research you shold be doing yourself that you request. It is VERY EASY to find using simple keywords in google.com

My first rotary hit over 225,000 miles bone stock. (gsl-se)
Aside from general maintenance, Never had a single problem with the motor.

How'd you get one to last that long?

Seek - I was going to recommend you get the VW, as long as they give you a "Fast" with it. But with only a three mile commute, you're not going to be driving enough to have fun no matter what.

Short trips are bad for any car but very very bad for a rotary in terms of mileage and reliability.

Rotaries are generally reliable if well maintained and driven hard with lots of high RPM.

Welcome to the club.

My pervious rotary was over 250k miles (little to no maintenance) before it blew a seal ('89 RX-7 n/a).

My current rotary is at 39k miles and seems to be running strong so far ('05 RX-8).

That's all the time I care to waste on this subject right now.

Good luck.

My first engine blew at 877.3 miles. second engine blew at 2234.9, third one blew at 3778, forth one blew at 9222, then I gave up and push my car off the bridge.

Anymore questions ?

You don't want a rotary. They spontaneously combusts into a giant ball of flames when you least expect it. Mine exploded 6 times on me already and it took my left arm with it... but my arm grew back.
