Purchasing an 8, how's this deal look?

Hey guys,

I've put a thousand dollar deposit on an RX-8 in Connecticut with this deal:

6 Spd with GT Package

$28620....Invoice, as stated by Edmunds
+00250....Advertising ("This is part of the invoice price, Mazda mandates it to all dealers" - Is this B.S.?)
=28870...."Their" Invoice

$28400---My Offer
+00195....Documentation Fee (again, B.S....but I can't seem to get around it...)
- 01500....Cash Back
---------------------------------
$27095....Total
$31200....MSRP ($31645 if you count B.S. doc fee and advertising fee)
---------------------------------
$ 04105....Savings=MSRP-Total ($4550 if doc fee and advertising fee added to MSRP)

Whaddy'all think? Plus, it's a post-M-flash vehicle VIN >35500. Now I just gotta shell out an additional $1000+ for snow tires/wheels, plus a roof rack for my snowboard, plus a down payment on my insurance policy... From what I understand, the Doc Fee is what they charge to get the car inspected, and to do all the paperwork. The advertising fee I understand to be a Mazda North America charge per vehicle to advertise nationally, and regionally. I still say B.S. to both... How's this deal look?

I think the advertizing fee is BS. Is this for an '04 or '05? On '04's, there is a $1500 rebate so you should be paying $1500 below invoice tops.

C'mon, any other opinions out there? It's just about $1525 off of Edmund's invoice price, or 1970 off of "their" invoice price, if you include their B.S. advertising and documentation fees... Can I get a better deal? Will there be better rebates in the future?

Since it's a "post M-flash" model, I'm assuming it's an '04 and not an '05?? I don't know what '04s are going for now, with the '05s now on the lot, but it sounds like a good deal to me. By the way, I'm not sure about the documentation fee (I call bullsh*t), but that advertising fee has got to be a joke. They're going to charge you extra so that they can place their ads in the paper? That definitely wreaks of B.S. to me. (PS. A lot of us are probably traveling for the holidays, so don't be surprised if you don't get a lot of responses here).

Be sure to ask them about any rebates that might be available. You sound young, so you would probably qualify for the College Graduate rebate, if they still offer it. Someone here also posted about a new $500 customer loyalty rebate that just came out, and you should inquire about that as well.

BTW, if you're making a trade-in, be sure to get them to commit to a price before you even bring it up. You'll get a better deal that way.

Last thing: if it helps you, I got my 8 for $3000 under invoice and I got it in mid-August.

Both the advertising and doc fees are crap.

Basically, from the dealer's perspective, you're paying invoice for the car (with the $1500), which I and many other people paid this past spring/summer!

Considering the posts of people purchasing 8's at $1000 to $3000 BELOW invoice, your deal would be nothing to write home about.

I would think that buying an 8 at the end of the year in the middle of winter in Providence you could do better. Get them to "No" and then you'll have a better idea of what they'll really take for the car.

Tell them you'll take delivery by the end of the year, and they'll be calling you if they want to move the car.

To qoute my salesman in Oct when I bought mine and there was a 1000 dollar rebate ..."We sold Rx-8's at $500 off invoice , there is another $1000 rebate ...go to KBB , select your car , options ect ..get the invoice price and knock $1500 off of it " So I bought my car $1500 off invoice two months ago . At the time , was about as low as it got . I felt it was a FAIR price , I was comfortable with the deal . I got the car at a great price , the salesman got commission and the dealership made some money off the sale . We all benefited from the sale from me to Mazda . I knew if I waited longer I could have got maybe another 1000 off like some people did . But I wanted the car , they had the car and I bought it , no regrets . Even with people getting $3000 off the invoice . If you want the car , can afford the payment , its at a good price , BUY IT !

Great reply Dr. Rockin...I feel good about this deal, I can afford it, so I might as well take it. I'll be an official "actually has an RX-8" member in the next few days!

Your offer is very close to what I paid for an RX-8 MT/GT about a month ago in the Seattle area. I suspect there may be a bit more you could squeeze out of the dealer, but you may conclude, as I did, that the deal was fair to all involved and since the dealer had located the car I wanted (nordic green) without a hassle, I went for it.

Enjoy your car; I'm certainly enjoying mine.

Hey portero, how many miles does the car have?
I am in the same situation, as yours. With these rebates on the 04 model, dealers are throwing those in, but i think you have to struck a deal as if there were no rebates.
For example, I'm in the market to buy a 04 model.
It's a 04 6spd gt and Nav. It has 170 miles on it.
Now the msrp is 33,2000
Dealer invoiced at 30,534.
Right now the dealer is offering me 29,343 with 1500 rebate.(tax and title would be 31143) I'm going back to the dealer tomorrow to bargain with them.
My offer is $27,800. $700.00 under invoice, 1500.00 rebate, and 500.00 college rebate. With tax and title it would cost me 29,300. So my would only cost $2,215 more than yours(since i have a nav) So you have a good deal, if it goes through.
I also think you should use the winter weather as a strategy. I'm telling them that i'm doing a favor for them by purchasing it now, since this car really cant be driven without snow tires. Just make something up, it may help a little.
In the end, we all want the best prices, but the most important thing is you have to be happy. And if that means spending a little more. Good luck with your purchase. Let us know what happens..

Hung Horse (interesting handle there)... You may want to visit another nearby dealer to get a quote from them. Tell them X dealership is offering you an 8 for $28,9 and see what they say. Since it's the end of the year and the '05s are slowly trickling in, I'm sure they'll give you a lower sum. Then go back to X dealership and give them the counteroffer. Tell them to take it or you go to the other dealership and put money in their pockets. That strategy got me a great deal.

Hey Horse,
The car has probably about 50 miles on it. After tax/title/registration, the car would be about 28000. So I guess it's about 1300 less than yours. Nav is about 1700 invoice so I think if you're able to swing it, you'll be getting a better deal. Either way, I think it's a fair price. We'll see how it goes...
