Opinions wanted on new purchase price
Opinions wanted on new purchase price
Hello all..... this is my first post on the Mazda forum. I have enjoyed looking around and now would like some opinions.
I looked at a 2005 yesterday. White with the Grand Touring pkg. The dealer is giving me this deal: $2,500 off msrp, plus $2,500 additional for financing through Mazda Credit. Final price: $27,409 plus t & t. They also want $299 for doc fees which I told the salesman is bs. He said many of the other dealers usually charge $800 or $900. You would have to be insane to pay that. I thought about $100 would be fair.
I would like to know what you think about the price, and the doc fee.
The car has the red/black leather, which I find very appealing. It is a 6 speed.
I don't like the terrible gas mileage, and oil use I have been reading about.
All input welcome
Thanks in advance, Alan

I'm not the authority on prices, but i can tell you what I paid for my brand new (4 miles) 2005 RX8 6 Speed with the GT package. I paid 28 and some change for my car.... not including tax though and the extended warranty though. Everything I've heard... 100 bucks for that fee is cool, but anything more then that is wack.
I was happy I got mine for 28ish with all the options I wanted on it

Tell him you'll pay NO more than MSRP out the door (after all taxes and fees). Explain to him that it's not your job to:
Feed his family
Make sure the dealer makes a buck, too
MSRP (for my zip code, from Edmunds.com, white 05 6sp GT) = $31,885
- $5000 = 26885
I'd start him at INVOICE: $29,232
Then subtract the $5,000
Purchase price: $24232 + Tax.
We pay 8.9% here, so that's $26388.65 after tax + whatever license fees your state charges.
Hit up Edmunds.com, find invoice prices...and start there.
I got mine for invoice - $2000? In incentives last year, + tax, license fees.

Start at invoice and then subtract the rebate. That is reasonable, and that's what S-plan would be, so you know they sell cars at that price and still make money. The rebate is not coming from the dealer so that should be separate. Don't let them fool you into thinking they are giving you a good deal when they are not. Negotiate as close to invoice as possible without the rebate.
The mileage will not be great. My best is 20, with all highway. My typical for mixed driving (and it doesn't seem to matter whether it's 70/30 or 30/70 highway/local) is 17, about the same as my V-6 4WD Tacoma.

If one line item is a $2500 financing incentive and another line item is a $2500 discount then the other line items don't really matter - just negotiate/accept the price you want. If you want to argue line-by-line they could throw out the $299 doc fee and throw out the '$2500 off MSRP too'.

Well-put...NEVER buy a car by negotiating payments. Only negotiate final sales price.
i work at a mazda dealership as a salesman. i would suggest checking your local newspaper for any deals on rx-8s first. i know my dealership is giving 8k off all rx-8s, but its only good for certain weekends. thats even better than what i bought mine for.
in reality, your dealership is giving you the car for basically invoice. unless december incentives changed from last month, there is a $1500 rebate on it and $1000 discount for using MACC (mazda financing). i think you can get a better discount because rx-8s arent selling good right now, especially this time of the year.
documentations is like 45 bucks if i remember right, but there is other fees, like registration and such. where i live tax is 7.75%. when we calc the out the door price its normally about 10% added. its a good rule of thumb here because its a real close estimate.
when you subtract rebates and discounts to find the out the door price you have to be careful. the rebates are taxed. so if the sales man says you are buying the car for $27,500 that means you buy the car for $30,000 and there is $2500 in incentives, that means the out the door is going to be:
$30,000 + tax & fees = $33,000
$33,000 + interest (ex 8%) = $35,640
$35,640 - incentives = $33,140
$33,140 out the door, which is about 1 grand more than it would be if you did the calcs off of 27.5k
like dmp said, never negotiate with payment. 20 bucks over 60 months adds over a thousand dollars.

I think the dealership in MD did what you describe and the NY DMV said it was wrong. According to the NY DMV clerk: sales tax is only calculated based on final, bottom line price for the car and that means after any trade-in vehicle is subracted too. The dealership in MD collected my NY sales tax (8.00%) based on the higher amount then sent me a check in the mail made out to the NY DMV. Since it was too much the NY DMV refunded some of that to me.

I would think one could do a lot better considering the time of year, and how many are left on dealer's lots.
I'm in no rush, so I'll just wait and see.
If you would like the name of the salesperson I spoke with, let me know.

I just bought mine on December 3, a Titanium Gray 6MT with the Sport package, and paid almost what your deal is for the GT. Wish this thread was here last week! I think the deal would have been better on the GT but I had to avoid the moon roof as my head was hitting the ceiling even with a pretty large seat recline.
I wish I saw this last week, especially since I just ordered my winter snows today and that added another $1200, but I'm not going to loose sleep over it. Absolutely love the car. Hope its reliable...

I'm currently planning on buying my first rx-8. I have seen several off you mention that we can expect $5000 discount. Looking online at Mazda's page they have incentives listed as $1500 customer cash and $1000 mac bonus. So where is the other $2500 coming from? And is this something I can expect at all mazda dealerships, or is it just limited to certain ones. I currently live in illinois (not chicago).
