Sounds good, but can you find a '04 model avail. for sale in your area?? From my research, Mazda's still trying to unload remaining '04's, which are pretty much identical to '05, and got an offer for a fully loaded Grand Touring package RX8 w/ 238 hp 6 spd man. for $25,999 (original sticker was $33,000).

Are there too many differences between the 04 and the 05? I dont remember reading about too many differences other than the layout of the inside of the car. I think I remember seeing that some pictures are different where the air vent on the front panel is a little different, but other than that, there wasnt much difference. If there are more, please let me know, the help is greatly appreciated.

Oh, also, the quote for the car is 29000 for 6spd Whitewater pearl with GT pkg.

No real differences!! None that would justify the extra few grand. The differences are...

Added white to the line-up
Sat radio button on radio
Flip-open style key
......

Thats about it....

I agree. Unless your heart is dead-set on white(which, btw, is a helluva fine choice) you could probably find a deal on an '04. Good luck nonetheless....

Thumbs up

I got my 2005 RX-8 GT package 6 spd for 29185 out the door...I think the deals they are giving are pretty decent. Don't let them hassle you man, they're the ones trying to sell the car, not you

It's a similiar situation whether you buy an 05 RX8, or a leftover 04. It all depends on if you wanna save that money now, or down the road. When you buy an 04, you are buying it for it's current value, just as you are buying the 05. Regardless of the deals, you are still getting what you pay for. You can get an incredible deal on an 04 yes, but it comes at the price of the depreciation already being there from a car that is already a year old. If you think long term, buying an 04 does not really save you all that much money. A large chunk of what you save will come back and get you come trade in time. For people who plan on owning their rx8 for more then 5 years, the 04 is a nice choice. If your plan includes a possible trade in within a 5 year period, then I recommend spending the extra money on the 05.

I agree--Sounds like they're just trying to stress you out to make you settle for a relatively unreasonable number. Unfortunately, since it's so early in the year, the leverage for the '05s is on their side right now. As Texas_8 said, unless you really want that white color that badly, I'd go looking for '04s and save yourself about $5000 easy.

That doesn't make any sense to me--Since a car is a liability and not an investment, I still think it's better to save on the front end. If hypothetically mileage and car condition are the same on both an '04 and an '05, the likelihood of an evidently substantial loss is, at best, speculative. I think it's worth the risk.

Yes, many think it is better to save on front end, and to an extent I agree. However, this is subjective, because there are many people who trade their car in every 3-4 years, sometimes sooner. No car is an investment, but if you are the kind who does trade in often, you will lose a chunk of that money. A year older car will always end up less valuable, but to what extent we simply do not know at this time. So, you are right that it is worth the risk, if you want to save money. In many situations it's better to get the car of your choice with the color and options you want, a car that has not been sitting on lot for a long time, and was built more recently. What I stated has no implication whatsoever on those who are not the type who trade in their cars. This is a basis to go off of if you do trade in, nothing more. It would be in your best interest to buy a leftover 04 and save that money if you are gonna use it long term, and/or drive it into ground. As I said before, you are buying the car for it's current market value, so keep that in mind.

I agree - depending on the discount.

You can get an '04 for dealer cost - $4,000 in incentives. If the same dealer also has 05s on the lot, you will be paying $2000 or $3000 over invoice. Even if you found a dealer that would let you do $1000 over that is a $5k difference.

The 8 has not been around long enough, but I looked at Edmunds prices on a use Z (comparable car). For the touring model 03 they show $22.7k/24.8k/26.6k and for the 04 touring z $24.8k/26.4k/28.9k. So at either trade in or dealer (retail) prices the model year difference is around $2k. Since the up front swing on this deal is $5k or $6k or $7k then no way is getting the 05 a better deal. Even paying $2k for a NAV you don't want it is a better deal.

USUALLY, the further you get away from new the smaller the differences in worth will be. Exceptions are re-designs or improvements in the cars and warranty. The book used price for an out of warranty car will show a drop off to reflect no more new car warranty. YOUR just purchased in March 05 car (even though an 04) should be worth more than book due to the fact it still has warranty left.

Let us take another comparable with a longer record, the S2000.

For 04 Edmunds shows $23.8k/25.3k/27.8k (still have warranty)
For 03 Edmunds shows $21.8k/23.2k/25.5k (still have warranty)
For 02 Edmunds shows $19.0k/20.4k/22.8k (most of these will be out of warranty)
For 01 Edmunds shows $16.6k/18.5k/20.2k (plastic rear window cars)
For 00 Edmunds shows $15.0k/16.7k/18.5k (also plastic rear window cars)

So there you have it. Just because someone on the forum or Internet says you are nuts to buy the old car - don't think they are right. Here are the number for 2 comparable cars and there is not more than $3k difference between ANY of them from year to year - even out of warranty VS warranty cars.

So if you can save $5k or more now - get the 04 car. Use the dealer location and inventory search system (use Google to find ZIP codes for cities beyond the normal reach of the system) and find an 04 that has what you want. And even be willing to pay a little extra for some things you may not really want.

Sure looks cheaper to me :D
