Need a good plan of attack

There are just a handful (about 9) brand new 05 8's left in my area. Of those, I think only about 5 will work for me. My question is is how would I go about getting the best price possible on a new 05 8? There are 3 dealers in my area that carry them. What would be the best method of having them compete with each other over me so that hopefully I can score a 05 8 with a touring or sport package and spare tire for around 22k.

What methods? (email, phone, in person)

What style? (passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive)

What price? (How should I bargain? Offer my own price or let them do the bidding?)

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

i went in person, sad down, let them do their thing and said "well there's another i'm gonna go look at after this one." that seemed to work cuz i did indeed leave the dealership and looked at another, and whatever a dealership quotes you, tell the next dealer they said less than they really did (white lie, but they're worse than lawyers.) i had the dealerships calling me on my cell most of the day. but remember, don't get talked into it, if you are not happy with the deal walk off, it isn't YOUR job to buy their car. patience is key cuz there are plenty of cars out there and its not hard to find another rx8.

Check out www.edmunds.com for some good tips.

I've found making phone calls and explaining to them that you're busy and can't drive all over the place is easiest (going in for a good haggle is probably the best way to get the lowest price though). Ask them what they have (after knowing what they have from mazdausa's inventory list) and tell them they have to give you their best offer over the phone (low hassle method).

I found this works well with very little hassle. Out of 5 dealers I called in my area only one refused to give a price over the phone. I received some very reasonable quotes with no haggling. Of course, I was also lied to repeatedly (one described a blk 8 as being a MT when I know from the inventory list it was AT). Another salesman called me back while I was visiting the dealer who gave me the best quote and told me that the car I was about to buy was in an accident.

So they are quite commonly full of **** but you must keep in mind that their goal is to get you to pay as much as possible. It’s their job. I wouldn't bother being aggressive as it might make everybody pissy for no reason. Kind but unyielding is probably the best way to go.

Finally try to get some financing before you go in. The dealership can rape you in the financing dept just as much as when trying to sell you the car (you can get a list of finance dept BS by googling it). I went in with my own financing and made them match it and take more off the price of the car. Good luck.

I think I would probably get a loan from my credit union before I go.

Ok so the email method has not worked. Now I'm gonna try phoning all of them. When I call, who should I ask for specifically?

Right now Mazda is offering $4000.00 incentive on all in stock 2005 RX-8's.
Be sure to mention that to the dealer. He will not volunteer this info.
I paid $21,000.00 for a new 2005 Sport package Automatic 3 weeks ago.

Compare the 05 to the 06's too - the Costco program on 06's is $400 over invoice. Plus, in the DC area there is a $1000 Manufacture to Dealer Marketing Incentive that gets subtracted from the price. I just picked up my 2006 RX8 tonight for $600 below invoice.

I would definitely find financing before I go to the dealer. Capital One has a blank check program. I asked for approval for $30K, then I could write the check for whatever amount I wanted up to $30K and have that as the loan total. They are giving 5.85% right now, where as Mazda Credit was over 8 and the credit guy with the local banks could only do 7.9%. And my credit score is slightly over 800.

Yeah, they'll take their sweet *** time if you e-mail directly. The only way they'll respond is with a service like autobytel.

I asked for the internet salesperson. They're more willing to discuss price over the phone. Some people say to ask for the fleet manager as they do not earn a commission on each car they sell. (Then again the one guy I spoke to who refused to give me a price on the phone was the fleet manager)

Credit Unions are wonderful. Get approved for a loan through them before going in. If the dealer takes 500 or 1000 off the car for financing with them do that. Then refinance with the credit union IMMEDIATELY. Depending on your credit union they may consider the car used after 1 month.

Be patient. You should expect this to take weeks and don't buy if you're not comfortable. Take your time thinking about the numbers they offer even if they are standing in front of you. Make them wait. They deserve it.

How many miles? AT or MT? 23,000 sounds about right for a new 05 (for 'New' England anyway, not sure where you are).
