Marine needs a new RX-8

I just got back from my second tour in Iraq and i've got an assload of cash saved up. I love rotarys. I had an 88 Turbo II but sold it before i got deployed. I really had a change of mind of the type of car I wanted while I was away dreaming about cars. I've thought about an STI, Evo, and S4, yet i can't seem to leave my beloved RWD rotarys. I don't really know much about the 8, so would it be better to buy a new or used one, which options should I look at, etc. I've read through a lot of the threads here, just wanted to get some aditional opinions.

rotary semper fi!!! w00t!

I love my 8.....never had a clue what i was getting myself into when i bought her....
she's not the fastest thing out there but she looks hawt and handles like a dream...Im glad i didnt buy an Evo or STI...cuz i didnt buy her for the speed...over all the RX8 is awesome...you must definitely test drive one before you make a decision as they do not resemble the 7 at all...

good luck...i know you will make the right decision...

and a pre-welcome to the club...we are a gr8t bunch...

Welcome back, Marine! If you go used--just make sure the recalls have been performed. Now is a good time to buy new. There may still be some Mazda Factory Rebates on "left-over" 2006's. Call your local dealers and see what they are offering. There should be, atleast, $8-$10k in rebates on 2006's. Test drive one back to back with other cars you may be interested in. That's the best advice I can give 'ya.

Hoo'yah.

thanx guys. i've been to a few dealerships and have found some between 18 and 23k. I'm only 19 and some of the dealers have been reluctant to let me test drive them. I test drove an 04, but it had 70K on the mileage. Which brings me to my next question. What kind of mileage should I be looking at? I don't want to get boned, which is why i was spit between new and used. Likr i said, i don't know much about the rx-8, so at what mileage do owners start dealing with problems. I know it all depends on the owner, but it seems like a ligit idiots question.

Mileage should not be too much of an issue so long as there is still an existing warranty. I belive the factory warranty ends at 50k, but an extended warranty could be purchased. If there is over 50k miles and no extended warranty--I'd stay away. If you've go the dough, I'd try to buy as new as possible. IMHO, peace of mind and enjoyment of the car is priceless. Try to get as new a model and with under 35k miles. Although the models have not changed much since it's introduction, newer models have less of the common issues. Also, figure out what accessories/packages/trim you want. This makes the most difference in deciding on which car. If you don't want/"need" leather; moonroof; etc. Then you could do well with a sport or base model. Navi is also a good feature as you CANNOT add one after the fact sans spending more than 2X the factory price!

Hope this helps.

For what it is worth, since you are active, if you have USAA for banking or car insurance, you can get pre-approved. Then you can cruise into the dealer with the check in hand, makes negotiating a lot easier. My wife bought my RX8 for me, and when they saw the check, off came almost 8K on a brand new car. Enjoy being home Devil Dog!

Not all Army guys say hoo-ah, just the uncool ones.

Then, it'll be just like the USO! All we need are some Puddle-Pirates! There should be some arounds since Kevin Costner just made a movie for 'em...

Ha Ha Ha

I would call you bad names for reminding me of Hawaii... but I will be home soon for R&R.

Def can't wait to drive my car, it better be out of the shop or I might lose it!

Welcome to the new joint military, where you have Army boats tied up to a Navy pier on an Air Force base.

HAHA thats SOO true. this whole joint baseing is driving those here up the wall. looks as if pearl may completely take over hickam!! civ's here are starting to sweat even though its ways off still. AF made a statement the other day.."the AF does not concurr with yada, yada, yada.. the AF is ready to assume the lead role in all joint base efforts we are invlolved in...." they dont want anyone else near our aircraft haha. screw it an a few years it will be Pearl Naval Air Station or something like that anyways

Hang in there...I was on the Kuwati beach during the tail end of ODS back in '91-'92 and again in '95 and again in '97. I've been out for near 4 years now--went back to school...

I was in Pearl City for a bit and we'd go there every underway to drop off and pick up our Fleet Admiral...I like it there. Bad experience?

Went in late 04 for 2nd Class, SCDD and Army Unique in 05. They changed the MOS from 00B to 21D at the end of 04. So I am technically a 21D20 Lead Diver. Thanks for the encouragement Phantom, unlike a lot of guys I only go North for missions, so life in the rear is pretty chill.

Late 02 huh? Do you know any of the Army Instructors that were there?

That's the weird thing about all the other (not Navy) branches. See, we use noun names for our rates (i.e. Machinist's Mate or Yeoman) and you guys use numerical identification. How do you remember all those MOS'es? Scudd, huh? You use HEO2 or Trimix?

No, I'm sorry, I can't say that I remember any...

We're totally thread jacking...if you want, feel free to PM me...
