Higher insurance for Velocity Red?

I've always heard the rumor that red cars cost more to insure. Anyone have data on this? True or false? Love the Velocity Red but may hedge if this is true.

Well, I've heard multiple people say they do NOT charge by the color and it's just a rumor that they do. I was also told this by a man that runs an insurance agency. He said it's amazing how many people think it's true. Red cars don't get in more accident than green cars, black cars, white cars, et cetera. They don't care what the paint looks like when they write up a policy!

no it's not true, I asked my insurance (Allstate) and they wouldn't have charged me extra if I bought a red Rx-8. But it's true that many people think that, for example when I was buying my Rx-8 the carsalesman was telling me not to buy Red= higher insurance compared to the other colors.

I have the VR, nope. Insurance (allstate) is not bad at all (2 cylinder, 4 door sedan). Another reason I couldn't resist the 8.

I agree that they do not charge you more for insurance on Red vehicles. I had a Flame Red Grand Cherokee that was lifted and such and it didn't cost me anymore.

However, my father has been in the car business for 27 years fixing insurance claims and now restoring beautiful antiques...

He said they may have charged more in the past because red paint is the most expensive paint to purchase. Thus higher insurance premium. But I think that has gone the way of the dodo.

Buy those red cars! The only extra money you may pay is in speeding tickets cause that red paint sure does attract attention! Mostly unwanted attention from badge wearing goons! But wait! That will effect your ins. premium! LOL

^oh wait, entirely forgot about that...

I've had my 8 for about half a year now, no tickets, despite all the speeding...

Good for you! I've had my black one for a week and I'm either going to kill myself or get arrested. LOL

I have a Velocity Red RX-8 and the insurance company did not ask me the color before I was quoted a rate to add it to my coverage. I was surprised that it didn't cost more to insure but I hear that's because it's considered a 4 door coupe and the rotary engine makes it count as a 4 cylinder engine.

However, I did receive a speeding ticket and if I hadn't cleared the points by going to traffic school, I would have had my insurance rates increased.
