Good price for a 2009 RX-8 GT?

Hi, I'm new to the club, and just put a deposit down on a 2009 grand touring. With the rebate plus some negotiation I got it down to 26k and change including destination (about 25,700 w/o destination). I feel like it's a hell of a deal, but just wanted to check with the experts first.

I'm glad I found this forum. You all put a lot of time and energy into it.

I got mine for $26.5k about a week ago. I was content with that since I didn't even have to haggle for the price, and also because I got $16k for my trade-in. So $10.5k all said and done. ;P

Don't know what your exact sticker price was, but invoice to 500 under invoice should be easily doable. That minus the rebate.

I usually take 1000 to 1500 off what KBB says when I go in the door. They Currently quote 09 manual GT at $30,639.00
so minus the 1500 is 29,200, then 4k rebate puts you at 25200, so you hit it perfectly.

I tried searching and browsing around but I'm not having any luck...is $4,000 the highest incentive Mazda has ever offered on the RX-8? I thought I remembered them offering $6,000 at one time a few years back but I can't be sure and can't seem to find any confirmation.

Theoretically, could one get one for S-Plan (or invoice) minus the $5,000 rebate?

That'd make me sell my 05 GT and get an 09 GT.

Yes. I just got my '09 R3 two days ago. Sticker is $33,030. You can pretty easily get to $30k by negiotation, then the $5k rebate is taken off at the very end, like your down payment. Thats what I did. Get it for $25k or so. Price was the only thing keeping me from getting an RX8, but the rebates made it possible.

It's decent, I got mine (Touring + Premium package = 31k MSRP) for 24k in August of 08, so you might still have some room, though I really twisted the dealer's arm to get it.. (and kicked them in the nuts.. >.>)

I just got mine on Thursday. $10,000.00 off sticker ($22,550). It was a dealer demo with 3,800 miles but they had another one on the lot with only test drive miles that they had knocked $9,000 off. Mine is the Red GT, everything but nav.

EDIT: To be clear, sticker on the vehicle was $32,550.00, I paid $22,550.00. Vehicle was driven as a demo by the Dealer's GM.

Seems like a good deal. I just got a 2009 RX-8 R3 for $27,500 with Sirius included, so I think you did just fine!

finally got it

Thank you to all who replied. I finally decided to take the plunge, and took home a brand new GT. Every time I sit in it I have a s**t eating grin, even crawling along in traffic...

First impressions on the 2009 are that the build quality is top notch. The engine is buttery smooth compared to a piston engine, and it has one of the best manual transmissions of any car I've ever driven. It's so quiet, except for the noises that belong - no rattles, creaks, or buzzes, just engine and road flying by.

The turning radius is incredible. It handles way better in the rain than I thought it would. The suspension strikes a perfect balance - it's about as stiff as I would comfortably want for daily driving, yet handles almost anything you can throw at it (at least anything I would do on public roads).

The seats are awesome, similar to the porsche cayman's. They're sporty, but also everything a GT is supposed to be for longer trips, without being too soft. Overall, the whole car in GT trim is a perfect blend of sport and luxury. It's neither to the max - no wood trimmed dash junk, or suspension so stiff you want to get a second car for trips over 50 mi. Who needs the luxury crap, and if you really want to track it, it would be easy to tune out the suspension/tires for track duty. It's the best handling, highest quality ride you can get without being fake sport-tuned tacky or snob - lux overkill like alot of other cars out there right now. Most important though, it passes the smile test. It's a car that will put a smile on your face every time you get in it, even a few years down the road long after the honeymoon is over. You can't say that about alot of other cars in the same price bracket.

Greetings, thought I'd add my numbers to your thread as well. Just picked up an '09 GT myself over the weekend and really enjoying it! I completely agree with you about it being a perfect blend of sport and luxury. I almost went for the R3, being the same price, but in the end, it was the GT. I just couldn't walk away from the deal I felt I got.

Sticker was $32,975 as it came nicely optioned with the Premium 2 package and the spare tire kit. It's hard to say what I really got it for.. did they overvalue my trade in or come down on the price.. all I know is that I paid about $12.5k out the door. That included my trade, the $5000 incentive from Mazda and all the taxes and fees. My trade blue-booked at $13k so if I go off of that, I suppose you could say I got it for $25.5k.

What really pushed me over the edge was this particular dealer was offering a lifetime powertrain warranty and free tires for life. I'm pretty sure I'll forfeit the tires since I won't be visiting them every time I need service but apparently the warranty is good anywhere! Let's see how many free engines I can get

I was able to get my R3 for $24995 - but I was offered another identical car at an even lower price $24800. Since the latter car had 220 miles on it (the former had only 32), I chose to stick with the higher priced vehicle. Regardless, I thought that it was a pretty fair price in the current market.

So...the current $5,000 incentive expires 11/2. Anyone think the odds are good that they will improve or do you think Mazda will just extend it? Obviously they still have a lot of 09 inventory to move.

Hard to tell. I was surprised it went from $4k (when I bought it) to $5k. I seriously wouldn't wait if you're in the market, because you'll be kicking yourself if the rebate is not continued into December.

i just picked up an R3 (supposedly the same price as a loaded GT, i think?) for $29,400 with a $5k rebate.

it's a little misleading when they say $24,400 b/c it's not really that. It's the sale price, plus tax, title and licensing, THEN subtract the rebate... ended up somewhere in the mid 27s after it was all said and done.

don't buy a car and look back and say wow, if i had waited another 3 weeks, i could have had it for 500 less (or whatever). Do the math and ask yourself it's a good deal for you or not. If it's a good deal for YOU at the time and you can live with it, go for it. If you wait another month, they might not have your model, trim, or color in stock anymore.

There were only 3 2009 R3's in blue in all of Cali. I jumped on it rather than waiting and fighting over $200 bucks b/c well, if i wait, someone else might snag it - that and the deal was phenomenal for me already. Work it out for yourself and don't go worrying if you could have been more cheap. In terms of financing, spread out over 4 or 5 years, it's really not THAT big of a deal (unless you're paying a stupid interest rate, haha)

Wow, $24.4K is an awesome price. The dealers that would discuss invoice with me all stated a $25486 invoice. I'm not saying that this is the actual number, but they certainly all seemed to align on that particular number (for an R3). Edmunds listed a number around $25288 as I recall, but I'm not sure that this price is any more reliable than what the dealers quoted me.

Regardless, to hit $24.4K they had to cut the price way below invoice. I don't know what Mazda has for holdback, but I've got to believe that you got all of that too in your purchase agreement. Congrats on the great negotiation!

i believe you're talking about 25486 as invoice minus the 5k rebate. IIRC, the invoice on the car is just over 30k.

the problem is, you pay taxes on the $5k rebate, so it's not really a $5k price discount. for simple math purposes...

$30,500 invoice + TTL (12%ish in CA) = $34,160 - $5k rebate = $29,160 out the door

vs

$30,500 invoice - $5k rebate = $25,500 + TTL = $28,560 OTD

unfortunately, with a customer cash rebate, you get the former, not the latter ($600 difference)

I managed to get my 'sale price' at $29,400, and yes, they were willing to sell that low, so it worked out for me... I was also a little upside down and i think they think they got me a bit on the trade, but I got what I felt was fair for my trade, so it worked out well...

Best price I've seen by far! I wish I would have done that vs my $21,750 OTD on the sport model last week. Ugh, wish I knew about the Costco deal. Just a normal membership gets you these deals? Hmmmm, I wonder what my trade-in is worth... heh

yeah, just go onto the costco website and click auto. you'll input what car you want to get, membership number, then they'll email you/call you back. if you want to buy from a specific dealer put that dealer's zipcode in.
