It's a 'Business and Occupation' tax collected by the State of Washington. It's about .5% here in Washington, or about $145 on a nex RX-8. I would guess many States and local governments collect taxes like this from companies doing business in their regions. Anyway, it's not a tax normally line itemed on invoices , it's just a 'cost of doing business' like paying rent. But, some car dealers add it as a line item to try and confuse the buyer into thinking it's 'official' and must be collected. If you call them on it they'll remove it from what I've read on this site. I fell for it! It was line itemed on the invoice with a spot to initial next to it. That should have been a clue enough for me to realize <something> was up.

Nissan dealers around here do the same thing by adding a line item on the dealer invoice called 'advertising'. When I was buying a Maxima a few years back I called BS on it. The dealer claimed it was a cost Nissan passed on to them. I told them that would be like McDonalds adding 5 cents to the cost of each burger at the register for advertising! They took it off.

This is why I'm not going to pay my loan for a couple of months as I told the dealer I would, I'm paying it off immediately and bitching about to anyone that'll listen!

Right. All they HAVE to collect from you is sales tax. If they <want> to they can try and collect B&O taxes, bottle water fees, sitting in their chair fees, test drive fees, profit..etc. You get the idea. They'll try and get as much out of you any way they can think of. Bastards!!

<rant>
I'd have no qualms sitting down with a sales person and telling them I'd pay 5% over their cost for a car. The problem is you never really know what their cost is, and they throw all this other crap in to try and confuse you. And this is with a cash deal!! Can you imagine the depth of the crap if you have a trade in and finance the whole deal! There are even dealers near military bases, or those that cater to people with bad credit, that roll insurance into the scam. You have NO idea what you've paid for anything!!

Just as a data point, I bought my '05 last Friday for $25,000 +ttl. w/ Sport Pkg + spare tire kit. Note this price includes the $1000 cash back from MAC. I felt that I could've gotten maybe $500 more off the price, if I had been a bit more persistent.....in retrospect I'm not sure why I wasn't I think I just didn't wanna hafta go look for a deal elsewhere (next closest Mazda dealer's a ways away). Oh well I guess when I think about what kind of value I've gotten myself , compared to what $25K buys with other brands, it seems like a relative bargain
