Dealership wants to charge $3000 to add appearance package

I'm going to buy my rx8 in winning blue this saturday. it's an 04 that doesn't have the appearance package on it. is this right? should it cost THIS much to add it on? he said there's the cost of labor to install and paint along with the part itself.

what's my alternative here...can i just buy the appearance package and have it painted and installed at a body shop for alot cheaper?

Yes you can. Go to the Rosenthal or Trussville web sites and purchase the parts at a "reasonable" price and have a body shop install them. You might also want to do business with another dealer.

Ask around here in the parts for sale thread. People are always upgrading their cars. That's how I got mine. And I'll bet you'll find one here for way less than $3000!

I know the Mazdaspeed body kit parts come factory painted.
I would speculate that the appearance package items come painted as well.
You could call a random dealer and ask if they come painted.

The appearance package costs $970 on a new car
plus $355 for rear spoiler.

$3000 sounds high.
If you are buying the car from them, you would 'think' they would give you a good deal.

I was under the impression as well that these came pre-painted. Seems like a high labor cost. Check with a few other dealers.

yeah, i thought i'd at least get some kind of deal on it if i'm buying the damn car from them. there's no way i'm paying 3grand for it. he didn't even include the rear spoiler with the quote.

Maybe he's quoting you on the MS kit. No one is that dumb to overcharge by that much... I hope.

If you pay $3000 then you are paying to get raped. End of story.

Buy the parts from Trussville Mazda and put them on yourself....we all have.

Yeah this is the best way IMO. So far the RX-8 has been the EASIEST car to work on that I've dealt with. It's practically plug and play. Not only will you have the pride of doing it yourself, but you get to know your car better and wont be sitting at home biting your nails hoping someone doesnt scratch or do something wrong to your brand new car.

EDIT: And I forgot to mention you have a huge resource RIGHT HERE!! Any of us would be more than happy to help out with any questions if you were to do it yourself. Hell there are already a couple of DIY's out pertaining to what you want to do.

They must be quoting the MS kit, if it's the appearance package then they are bending you over and not even being considerate enough to use lube...

Just cut your losses and find another dealer. This one should have offered to find you an 8 that is closer to what you want and arrange a dealer to dealer swap. They are taking you for a ride...

Have you checked the Mazda site so see if another dealer in the area has a winning blue car with the package already on it? $3000 for a $970 option? That's robbery.

Mazda site tends to be quite a bit behind the times on dealer inventory..

ok so i finally picked up my winning blue rx8 from them. the reason i didn't just buy one with the appearance package on there already is because there aren't anymore winning blue 04s in houston, and that's the color i wanted.

the dealership by my house gave me a quote of 1300 for the appearance package along with the fender strakes. i'm gonna go ahead and do that
