Yeah thanks for all the insurance info. My insurance agent is my best friends dad. That article said that "spilled coffee is dangerous while driving", if you paid close attention to your article. Do you think I go spilling my coffee in my car!? Do you think I've ever spilled a thing in my car!? So It DIDN'T SAY anything about DRINKING COFFEE, did it!? What it did say was that "THE DANGER in a MT is DOUBLE!!>>>>> "Hagerty found that driving a standard vehicle with a stick shift while eating/drinking can double the potential for an accident, since one hand is holding food and the other hand is shifting. That leaves no hands for steering, says Hagerty. Even more dangerous is using a cell phone, eating, and driving. "When the phone rings, the driving distraction increases significantly and, in a rush to answer, drivers forget they're driving," says Hagerty."<<<< Looks like they didn't say anything about AT, re-read your article MORON!!

As an AT owner, I do agree with many others about the weakness of the engine. There are times that I wish I could have a little more zip in my drive. But do I regret buying an AT and not an MT? Absolutely not. I have to support Rich RX-8 for the most part because honestly, many people jump against owners of ATs- raising the same old tired points about not enough power, acceleration etc. There are people folks, who only drive Auto (for good or for bad) and people have to learn to RESPECT this fact. There are enough owners of MTs out there, so it is important for AT owners not to feel intimidated or chided just because they choose to have an lower-powered engine than the rest.
There are of course a few advantages of having an AT:
1/ In bumper to bumper traffic, having an MT has no discernible advantage! In fact, having to shift gears constantly (wearing out the clutch) is not going to help anyone go faster during rush hour traffic. I take the highway most of the time which in my city (Toronto) is rather congested.
2/ In winter time, although MTs have more control, it can be argued that one can lose traction more easily during shifting. AT also makes it easier to rock the car out of a tough spot.
3/ With an AT, the concentration is all on the steering- many times during a snow-out or where poor visibilility is present, I was able to direct my attention fully on maintaining my road holding without having to shift gears to match the driving conditions. More attention on the road meant that it was a safer experience for me.
4/ All this talk of having an MT does not make one necessarily a better driver. This car is known for its exemplary roadholding and so it is important to know how to maintain good car control during lane changes etc. I can't tell you how many people cannot hold their lanes properly- in other words driving without veering from right or left constantly.
5/ AT was invented for the sole reason that many people find it convenient. Yes- you give up some control and speed, and maybe a little bit of that fun and excitement, but if I want to drive this car like a luxury sedan, I can afford to do so.
6/ The AT although 1.5 seconds slower can be a bit of a handicap in certain situations, is still certainly quite zippy when need be. It has more power than I could ever need and most of the time I have never had trouble passing most cars when I need to.
7/ Anyone with a driver's license can drive an Auto. In an emergency, or other times, the wife etc will have no trouble driving it.
So, let us support each other. Help others make an informed decision. If one is comfortable with driving manual and likes to experience the higher RPMS and a little more speed, then the MT is an excellent choice. If one wants the convenience, and hassle-free experience and still want the exemplary roadhandling of the RX-8, then they could go for the AT.
Either way folks, let us support each (MT and AT owners alike). We are all here for one reason- to make owning an RX-8 a nice and pleasant experience. It will be a shame for owners of other cars to look into our forums and see RX-8 owners fighting with each other over issues that should be non-issues.
Let us come together- we are an RX-8 family!
Amen.

That aside Rich RX-8 is the one that started the name calling and hostility, for someone as mature as he claimed he is, he sure is fouled mouth calling everyone a moron just because he doesn't agree to something others said. One moment he said its dangerous to street race then he supports the idea that drinking coffee while driving isn't. I wouldn't mind anyone justifying their point of view but leave the hostility to yourself (Rich RX-8) and your age doesn't dictate yor wisdom.

Thanks Boy George go back to holy cross and pray you'll grow some nads someday so your friends can kick them. Oh and yiksing I didn't know MORON was a foul mouthed word, do you go to holy cross too!? And the whole "wisdom" thing, you sound like you're 500 years old with a staff and a big grey beard.

Thanks yiksing for the anger management! I'm so hostile aren't I!? I didn't know I could be such a hostile typer, I just wanna dish it back to all you AT bashers. I have no respect for people who think that faster is better. I learned how to drive MT on an EVO, I know what fast is. I bought the Rx-8 for the practicality and handling. My girlfriend got scared when I drove the EVO and said she would never get back in that car again! When I drove the MT Rx-8 she had no problems and said it's was smooth and didn't jerk her around in the seats, and then I decided to try the AT and I liked it just as much, plus she can drive the paddles and she thinks it's fun as hell and so do I. The EVO was almost the same price but where I live you don't really have the opportunity to drive that fast so I got the AT Rx-8 cause it drives great and is much more fun than my other car (volvo S70glt) and way less to maintain. I just like giving you guys crap. Don't take it personally. Sorry if I've become hostile, but I chose style and handling over speed and I think thats what alot of cars don't have, and thats what makes this car so freaking cool.

The AT driver has lots to say actually. I forgot to tell you that your avatar reminds me of my girlfriends cat that eats his own crap, vomits, then eats the crap and vomit concoction.

leave the kid alone...hes just bitter he wasted $20,000+ on an automatic. its ok buddy go find a traffic jam and drive in it, that should make you feel better. while your out, stop and get some coffee, and drink it while you drive.

Wasted $20,000? That seems a little harsh doesn't it altar boy? The only traffic jam you're gonna get in is the three way traffic jam with two other priests. I've had my car for a year and have it half paid off, I've got more equity than I need so it's definetly not a waste of anything, you're wasting your breath with the AT bashing.

my name's rich.
sir, i was the first person to respond to this thread, & i warned the woman, not guy (dear husband...?), about the 'weaker' engine, because she asked about people being happy with the 4 speed auto. you need to just get a hold of yourself, because YOU started the ranting. everyone was responding to YOU & your madness, & when everything had finally calmed down, you went back to pick more fights (mature businessman???). drinking a hot beverage is THE most likely way to pour something of that nature on yourself, no matter what kind of transmission you have. & so what if you havent spilled anything in your car before? first off, that is highly unlikely, & secondly, what if someone else makes you? maybe the kids in the back seat bump your seat, & you spill something? the kids in the car suffer whatever consequence might come from your spill.
& by the way, overtaking a civic could possibly refer to passing someone when necessary. the added power of the manual could help if someone is being a jackass & speeding up when you are trying to pass. he wasn't referring to racing, as has been stated many, many times.
have a great day. or night.

My defending the AT is MADNESS!? You sound like the guy who thinks MORON is a foul mouthed word!? What does the beverage being hot have to do with" pouring it on myself", you don't make sense, I wouldn't pour anything on myself!? "Drinking a Hot beverage is the most likely way to pour something of that nature on yourself "???? You need a translater buddy!! Keep it simple next time. You're not making a great point here. And you don't need extra power or a MT to pass someone, you don't make any good points and are wasting your time.
