Anyone else get 10K off MSRP?

Just got home from picking up my RX8, I read a lot about 6000-7500 off MSRP but I was wondering if anyone else got a great deal like me. I picked up a new leftover 05 today, specs on the car are:

Winning Blue/Black Cloth
6spd Manual
Sport Package
Appearance Package
Rotary Accent Package

MSRP on the car was a bit over 30,000 and I got it for 22 drive out (about 1700 in tax, title, license and fees). The price for the actual car before TTL was 20,300 if memory serves me correctly so I got just short of 10 grand off sticker for the car itself.

Nice job. That's one hell of a deal. There are still about a dozen 05 models left at my local dealership. I have been tempted to check their prices to see what they are selling them for, but I'm not gonna be buying one anytime soon. I still cannot believe they have that many 05s left this far into 2006. The deals are totally understandable, and really necessary. The moment you drive off lot, you suddenly have a year old used car, so they have to give incredible deals. I believe the moment you drove car off lot, it now only retails at about 24-25k, so it sounds like they were more then fair to you, and you totally avoid the depreciation hit, along with getting a damn good price. Enjoy!!

Thanks guys, I had to do a ton of work to get this deal. All the dealers in the Dallas area couldn't get much more than 5000-6000 off MSRP and then tack TTL on top of that so I was stuck at about 25 out the door.

I knew I wanted a sport with appearance and maybe rotary accent so I went on the Mazda USA website and searched inventory for every major city in Texas and made an excel spreadsheet of what models they had/colors etc and started calling. Most the sales people were rude on the phone or didn't get back to me.

Eventually I found a dealer in San Antonio (Ingram Park) and a sales guy that was nice enough to take some time and get me the info I needed (What colors they had in sport package, mileage on the car, build date etc). We haggled on price and I basically told him the same thing I told every other dealer, that I'm calling around and have the money to go buy a car next week if they had the best price. He got back to me the same day and told me they had a Blue 05 sport 6spd with appearance for 22,200 driveout. I haggled the rotary accent package into the deal and wanted 22 flat out the door and he took it so I took a 1 hr flight and went to buy the car. Put 13K down from my M3 I just sold today and financed 9K on the rest @ 270 per month on a 36 month term.

My advice is do a lot of calling around and use the best price here to get a better price somewhere and find a sales person that will actually do his/her job right and take care of you. You may have to do a little traveling but for 10K off vs 5-6 you can't complain. If you happen to be in TX I know Ingram Park in SA has about ten leftover 05's and they're all manuals and are going at good discounts. My sales guy was Rick.

GEEZ! I'm guessing that's like 34 MSRP, tack on a few options like Navi and you're at 36 and then 3 over sticker you're at 39 plus TTL and that's nearly 41-42 grand out the door or twice the cost of mine

Grand touring is very nice, I just can't fit in a sunroof equipped car because I like to sit fairly straight up, am 6' tall and need to wear a helmet for autocross and track days.

The price you pay for getting to have the hottest, newest thing, so don't be mad. There's always a hidden downside to buying a leftover 05 RX8, but if you have the patience, and do the numbers right like this guy did, it's well worth the deal. I personally wouldn't pay 5-6k off msrp on an 05 RX8 now, because most of that deal is gone on depreciation. You start talking 8-10k off msrp, you're looking at getting a leftover model, and having the option to trade it in in a couple of years without taking the huge hit.

By the way I had to drive it all highway on the way home since I flew in to San Antonio to buy the car and I live in Dallas. I varied the rpms and speed a bit to help meet break in requirements.

Is 320 miles for the first full tank acceptable? I think I got to 295-300 or so when the yellow light came on and I drove it another 20 miles. If I had stayed at a constant 65 mph instead of slowing down to 50 and going up to 75 and back down I think I could've gotten 340-350 on the tank. Also does gas mileage improve after the break in mileage is done?

Getting that many miles on a tank is excellent. You are lucky - many people don't get anything close to that.
Regarding improved mileage after break-in, no. I have not experienced any significant change. I have relatively good fuel efficiency but not as good as yours.

Keep in mind guys I was driving 90% highway on the first tank of fuel. I flew out of town from Dallas to San Antonio TX to pick up the car and drove it 300 miles back on a 3 lane highway. I think if you took city driving out of the equation you guys would get 300 miles to a tank as well.

Now if I could get 20-21 mpg with 50% highway 50% city I'd be happy. Really happy with the car so far except my drivers side door has a bit of a rattle already and going from 3rd to 4th is a bit sticky sometimes.

Nice, I knew there had to be better deals out there than 6500 off MSRP since almost every dealer was giving that discount. I did notice that not many dealers are willing to go more than 8000 off MSRP on lower models like sport or base.

What packages did you get, what was MSRP on your car and what'd you pay driveout?

As a slight aside...

Does anyone know how to find what factory-to-dealer clearance money is being given to the dealer in each market?

It sounds like TX dealers are getting some serious money from Mazda - but I don't/can't think I can assume that the same is true everywhere (I'm in Colorado).

Thanks.

I think all the dealers get more or less the same 3000 rebates and then they have individual kickbacks and incentives that are not published. I basically got 2 grand off my car because they entered it into inventory as "demo" even though it was never demo'd but Mazda gave the dealer another 2K to get rid of the car so I got 10 instead of 8 grand off.

Be careful though, some cars were damaged at port during the hurricanes. They were all fixed by Mazda and 2K discounts were given to dealers to sell those cars.

Aren't the ports on the west coast, and hurricanes were in the gulf and along east coast?

Haha yeah that was me, my SN there is Eosphoto. I miss the M3 a lot mostly for the torque and luxury feel but the RX8 feels very nimble and when I can actually rev it past 4000 rpms past break-in I'm sure i'll fall in love with it too.

Good question, I'm not really sure about that but a trustworthy sale guy @ freeman mazda here in Irving told me that there are some damaged cars floating around that mazda fixed and is discounting.

you were also one of THE FIRST people to have them(makes it worth that 3k in my opinion) and in that first year you had it, people probably stared with thier jaws to the floor wondering what you were driving

Our '05 GT (arrived last week) was a little over 25k out the door, so a rounded out 7k off MSRP. 10k sounds like a very rare deal though.

Just glad to be not sitting in a bunch of negative equity. If gas hits $6 a gallon, we can sell the 8 and still come out on top. Feel sorry for folks who paid top dollar for '05s at the end of 2004.
