Am I dreaming? What do you think...

...about this:

OK, I have $2,700 so far for a down payment

I am going to trade in my 1994 Ford Probe GT ($500 max probably)

So, that's $3200 total down payment...sorry, I know you guys know how to count...LOL

So, what are the chances I could get a RX8 (Sport Package) "used" for $22,000 out the door. I think I might be dreaming...and might have to save up more, but let me know what you think.

Thanks for the help!

PS. Im saying this because the a brand new one, with the rebate, S-Plan, can go for close to that price so a used one should be cheaper.

Got my 04 for 24,600 a couple of months ago, sport package, 6 cd, spoiler and spare tire brand new not used. You take that down payment and apply it to my price. This was in KC. Don't see why with an 04 you couldn't make it happen.

I went to the dealer and told them:

I have $2,700 + $500 for my car, the rebate from Mazda $1,500, and the S-Plan pricing...but they said the best they could do was $26,500 (out the door TTT) for one with the touring or grand touring option. This is still too much for me...so, I'm worried I can't get a RX8 with what I have.

I think I"ll have to get it used...that's OK, but a guy I called about the RX8 used...just told me he could not give it to me for $22,000 either....so, I worry...

They said 26,500 for the GT. Now go look at the price of that option vs sport and count your down payment. Don't seem desperate. If you have the means email many dealers. They need to move the 04s. I had 5 different dealers competing for my business. I also just bought my wife a 04 Mazda 6, sticker was 24,195 and i got it for 18,100. They will deal but they have to know you don't have to have the car and you will go elsewhere. You have to get them to the point where they will still make money but not quite as much and would rather not make quite as much then lose the whole deal.

So, what you are saying is $22,000 out the door for a used is reasonable? Keep the hope alive?

Keep the hope alive. Its reasonable for a brand new one. Like I said. I paid 24,600. You subtract your 3200 dollar down payment from my price and look at what you have.

BTW, I ended up financing $19,100 for my brand new 04 sport package. I also just bought my wife a 04 Mazda 6 brand new. Sticker was 24,195 and I got it for 18,100 and financed 15,900. Thats 34K financed for 2 brand new Mazdas. I know people who have more then that financed in a new SUV, Truck, etc...

That's what I want to do, but more like under $19,000...just by a bit at least. So, $3200 minus $22,000 gives me $18,800...perfect!

Recheck the price on the Probe and sell it outright. I just got $1500 for my 91 GT. Trade in would have been well under $1000 if they even cared.
With what new '04s are selling for now, you ought to be getting close on a used sport package. Check Edmunds for both cars.
EDIT: Edmunds has private party base price for a sport package at $20,500, dealer about 22. You're in the zone, man!

Wait - do you mean you want the final price with tax, title, etc. to be $22,000, NOT counting your down payment? I think everybody read that as "I have $22,000 to finance, and $3200 for a down payment" and they read that as a purchase price of $25,200. Please clarify.

Yeah, that is what I was trying to say. Here it is broken down:

RX8 price with (TTT) $22,000
I put a down payment and trade in my car (-$3,200)

I am left with $18,800[B] to finance.

That's why I was saying AM I crazy to think that deal is possible?

Update: I found two RX8's (one in FL the other in VA) for $22,900 to $21,980 and am about to call to make an offer.

So, the dealership would have to sell me their RX8 for about $20,500 so then to add tax and bring it to my price. This is what Im saying...

Why not sell the probe to someone before you trade it in, get more cash down that way?
That is the best way to maximize what I get for the Probe but it has not been easy finding RX8's here in FL so I might be without a car for too long. I dont' want to rely on anyone driving me around or lending me a car (no one can lend me one at this time) so I might have to use it as trade bait.

I went to edmonds and they gave me a value of about $1000...private party sale, $500 trade in, and $1,800+ for retail. My car has 146,000 miles (112,000 from the previous owner) and is in AVG condition so I probably could get the $1000 selling it on my own but I cant be without a car for too long.

Update: A dealership had a 04 6spd silver RX8 listed for $22,900 so I called the guy. I told him $22,000 and the door and he said...I kid you not:

"You must be F**king crazy...F**king crazy"

No wonder the car has been around for so long if this guy is a good salesman then I can fly! I could not belive this guy...either way, I don't care too much...I'll keep looking. I am realistic that it might be hard to find considering how rare the 8 is here and the deal I'm looking for is not an easy one...at least I think.

Thanks for your help everyone!

Actually, you may do well with this dealer by going against the advice always given here. Usually, you should agree on a price before negotiating the trade-in value, and you should not go in with "I have X to spend, what can I buy?" In this case, you have more knowledge than the dealer, so you may be able to play his game. He may not be willing to quote his lowest price to you, but may give that price to you in the disguise of a higher trade-in value. You MAY be able to say "I have X amount of money and this car to trade, how can I get into this car?"

What do you all think?

You may be getting to the end of the '04s and cheap deals. You might have to suck it up and find a different guy at the same place. BTW, where is the car in VA?

Yeah, I saw one in VA but I told them no. It was the base base base 6spd. It had a CD changer but no sport package like I wanted (at least) so for $21,600 (with shipping) was more than I was willing to pay for a RX8 without the package I wanted.

I have seen 3 here in FL but none of them want to give me the $22,000 out the door price. I told them, I know 04's are going for close to that NEW but I guess they will find a sucker some place out there paying more for a 2003(04) RX8 than a brand new 04???

Wait, actually I have one left to call but it's in RED and a 03 build date so I'm not in a rush with that one.

The search continues...I'm about to call Mazda cause I think I can get an 04 for the price I want after:

(1) S-Plan pricing (which takes about $1,900 of the price)
(2) $1500 rebate
(3) $2,700 down payment
(4) $500 trade in value for my car

I think, with all of the above I should be able to get a RX8 "6spd & sport package" for $22,000 out the door (financing $18,800) after my down payment.

I think I'm less crazy...and I have more bad dealerships than anything else, I'm about to call Mazda about this.

Wow, S plan and the rebate! If you find an '04 you like, you can't lose! Best of luck!

Well, I think the dream is dead...what was I thinking?

I just can't afford a RX8...not a new one at least and for a used one I'll have to save about $5000 to put down. I think this dream of the RX8 might be dead. In FL there are hardly NO 04 RX8's to be found. Lease, buy...either way the car is too expensive for me and it's a hard pill to accept. $330 or less payment on a RX8 is impossible apparently so I'm about to just forget about it.

Maybe If I wait till next year...we will see, but I'm kinda down right now about all of this. I need a better job I guess...
