Should I get a late production 2004 rx-8 or a 2005 ($2000 cdn. more)?

2005 gets you:
  • Pearl White
  • bayonet style combination key/fob
  • not much else AFAIK

I'd save the money, especially since I wouldn't want a white RX-8, but that's me.

Go for the 2004 unless you want white.

Yeah, of maybe $1,000. But you'll save that more than that just buying a 2004.

maybe, but with random 2004 cars having horrible 12-14mpg issues, it's like playing Russian roulette. If this is common knowledge, you'll see more than $1000 drop from 2004 to 2005 model resale values.

I personally don't have a problem with any 2004 model with a build date in 2004.

yeah i agree i dont think many pople are going to want a car with that low of gas mileage especially if it is used. i think alot of focus is going to come off it anyway if the new 7 comes out. or if you want to be on ''top'' then go with the 2005. but really no difference

Welcome.

It depends on what you are willing to budget. There is nothing wrong in buying a used RX-8, even a 2004 model. Just make sure you check to see that everything is in order.

A service mgr I talked to said he wouldn't even think about buying one with an old build date. Cars with VIN's <35K (last 5 digits) are too old (my opinion) and have service bulletins and flash issues attached.

I ordered an 05 and the dealer said I should expect no more than 3% price increase. We'll see.

Good luck whichever way you go.

I'm planning on a 2005 in nov/dec timeframe - granted, if my dealers have 04's still on the lot and they are fitting to my style & good build date, then I will probably deal on those too.

But they'll all have been done before you even get them. I've got one of the first build dates- 6/24/03, and it's been perfect, aside from the standard recall and TSB things. I get 20+ mpg, I've got 22k on the car, and the only real issues i had were the A/C and oil pan (and I doubt there are any as early as mine left anyway, so those wouldn't even be an issue).

In the end, it's up to you. The chance that you get a crappy car are slim to none, whatever you decide.

other than the white there are no physical differences right? Everything is the same aside from (maybe) small bug fixes?

It depends. If you plan on keeping car for a long time, and esentially driving it into ground, then definitely go with an 04, and get a MONSTER deal. If you hang on until the 04s are gone, the deals will be great on the 05, and you will make back the money on depreciation, and get a newer model to boot. Likely buying an 05, and trading it in in 4-5 years you will save more money, then if you buy an 04 and do same thing. There's a reason why we get such good deals on the 04 folks. The fact is car has already depreciated significantly. It's simple really. If you have plans on trading car in in 4 years, get the 05. If you are gonna keep it at least 6-8 years, save the money and get the 04.

I don't know man, but 4 means "death" in just about every asian language. It's very rare to see any asians have a 4 in their license plate. Always a 2 or an 8, which sounds like "easy" and "to get rich". Superstition though...

If you check many posts here, not all dealers do the required service work, gladly. It appears that sometimes its like pulling teeth to get them to act. Also, if you read the CONSUMER NOTICE on TSB's it says "Customers should not assume this service bulletin applies to your car..." Gives the dealers an out. They are not obliged to do the work automatically. They don't have to do any TSB work unless brought to their attention by customers. So I'd rather not even deal with the games.
