Steve Kan Tuning Day

Not sure if there is any interest here but thought that I would keep all my rotary friends informed.

I have been talking with Steve Kan over the last week to see about getting him in back to the NW. In addition to this I have also spoken with a few forum members about tuning their cars. We need 5 cars w/ deposit before Steve is willing to come out.

Bio:

For those that have not heard of Steve Kan here is a little bio from his website:

Steve Kan is one of the most renowned car tuners in the world. He has tuned countless vehicles using name brand aftermarket fuel management systems. He has evolved his own skills and methods tuning rotaries, and piston engines. Click Here to read what people have to say.
Steve started his tuning journey in 1995 from his personal vehicle. After success with his car, along with many others who wanted his tuning ability services, he started making a name for himself in the rotary community. In 1998 he teamed up with Rotary Performance, and launched his professional racing career. Since then he has opened his own performance facility in Fort Worth, called Gotham racing, and travels all over within the United States providing tuning services.
“Many people ask how I came up with the shop named Gotham racing. The answer is very simple. My race car was nicknamed the "Bat Mobile " at the tracks and local street scene.”
Steve earned a degree in BSEE (Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering) and has a wealth knowledge with electronics and programming. In college, he was involved with the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) program as a hardware designer for the engine management system. This, among other things, is what makes Steve one of the best Rotary and Piston tuners in the world.

Acceptable ECU’s

Haltec
MicroTech
MoTec
GReddy eManage
Wolf3D
APEXi PowerFC
APEXi AFC
Hydra EMS
AEM EMS
Autronic
Links
LS1 Edit
SDS
Fast
Cobb Pro Tuner

Tuning costs:

$350 - Stock Turbo up to 12psi of boost (pump gas only) 1 map
$400 - Aftermarket Turbo up to 16psi of boost (pump gas only) 1 map
$450 - Aftermarket Turbo from 16psi - 25psi of boost (race gas and/or auxiliary injection only) 1 map
$600 - Aftermarket Turbo up to 25psi of boost (pump gas and race gas tune) 2 maps

On all tuning sessions there is a Non-refundable $200 deposit.

Additional costs will be applied for dyno time. Dyno time will be $85/hr. Most tunes take anywhere from 1-3hrs.

Schedule:

I would like to give people an ample amount of time to get their cars ready. I would also like to ensure that there is a sufficient time gap between this tuning session and the tuning session held last June. I feel that a time that would accommodate both would be in the end of September. I am open to suggestions however. Once we have decided on a specific date I will coordinate with Steve. Please vote on a date and a back-update to ensure that we can get a slot with Steve.

Location/Dyno type:

Depending on the amount of cars we might rent the dyno for 2 days. In order to book the dyno I need to gauge interest. Dyno time will most likely be spent at Horsepower Connection in Olympia. It is a 2 wheel Dyno Dynamics dyno rated for 2400hp. It also has the ability to do steady state tuning which provides a large advantage for the tuner.

Additional information:

For more information, media or testimonials please go to Steve’s website:
www.SteveKanTuning.com

For local tuning session held this year please visit this thread:
http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.ph...ight=Steve+Kan

Questions:

If you have any questions please send me a PM. I will be coordinating the event. Also all of the people that I have talked with that are still interested in getting a tune please PM me or comment in this thread.

I don't understand what makes him world renown. I've never heard of this guy.

^^ that is what I figured.

Steve is really well known in the Rotary scene for RX-7's. As stated in the article above he made a big boom in the mid 90's. I think that the primary reason for this is there are a lot more people modifying the older rotary powered cars(myself included). As we all know a slight modification with a rotary usually means standalone. Take for example the FD. With a downpipe, mid-pipe and FMIC they reccomend a aftermarket ECU.

I am not too familiar with the RX-8 scene. But I thought that I would share this with you folks. I would not be surprised if there are any cars that will be attending from here. I think that to warrant a standalone you would need to be running a turbo setup.

If you have any doubts with Steve's name read through that second thread or go over to RX-7 club and read some testimonials. You will be more than impressed with the overwhelming amount of good responses. I have yet to read a bad thread.

If cobb ever gets off their @$$3$, we wont need stand alone or piggy back for boost on the 8, either. We will need tuning help, though.

I've heard of him, but I've also seen the occasional thread that indicates a plethora of hype. Not saying he's not damned good, but when you tune as many cars as he has, sometimes it's tough to live up to your own legend. His pricing looks more than fair though. A local shop with much less experience is likely to charge considerably more.

Yeah. I think you really want to have someone that understands rotaries tune your car as well. It's just a different animal from piston engines when it comes to things like timing. The average piston engine tuner my be very capable at tuning regular engines but would probably have their head pop off if they saw how much timing we run and what actually makes the most power.

I still don't see how it makes him world renown. If someone wants to be self proclaimed world renown, he better have been on Mazda's rotary development team for the 787B doing "engine calibration." I don't even think the name of that guy is published anywhere, so even someone who is truely world class in engine calibrations for rotaries isn't "world renown."

Steve sounds like a totally awesome guy to do tuning on rotaries though, I just have a problem with someone saying that they're world renown for something when it's obviously just some quick BS someone typed up. I'd rather hear about what he's done and what his accomplishments. Was he the tuner on A&L racing's FD? Some Mazdaspeed efforts on the racing circuit? etc...

Hate to say it but he has the best reputation out there. When it comes down to it there are no tuners for the rotary that have not had their name slandered on many occasions.

Shaun, I agree. Totally different animal. The beast goes the other was as well. I have seen rotary tuners that try and tune a piston engine and it is apparent that they are out of their league.

LCheung, I think that was an article that someone else wrote about him. As I mentioned before there are people all over on rx7 club that run his tune. If you doubt his abilities I suggest that you take a peak over there. Either way his talents are proven in the community.

It does not sound like there is interest over here. The market just does not seem developed enough. Am I correct?

My 2 cents:

I've heard good things about his tuning. Rx8 engine management is a different game but I'm sure he'll conquer them too.

If you have to ask why you would need his services, then you don't need his services. Very simple.

Until you start stuffing extra air in the engine, tuining is going to yield mild results. Until turbo and s/c kits come down in cost and up in quality, there won't be many FI 8s out there.

That is what I figured. Just trying to invite all my rotary friends

We have enough people so he will be coming. If there is someone later down the road that wants a tune let me know.

We will be bringing Steve back two more times. Once at the end of May and another time at the end of July.

I heard that there was a break through w/ software on the RX8(not sure if this is true). If there is anyone running a piggy back or stand-alone that would like to tune just let me know.

Last time Steve was here he tuned a NA 2nd gen, the car started w/ ~150whp and ended w/ ~175whp. All of this was done on a dyno dynamics as well. I was very impressed.

Yes, Cobb has released their Access Port for the RX8. We can now write and flash our own custom tunes right to the OEM ECU.

Agreed. If he has a Cobb Protuner license the AccessPort folks can get custom Dyno Tunes!

This may warrant me buying one early.

Let us know when the dates are set and where.

He will need to have this software in order to write new maps for the Cobb unit and upload them.
