He's selling it. Not sure if he's coming back with something else, but I loved watching that car. He had great car control and that boxer 6 sounded freaking awesome echoing down the track. He's asking for $32k, no idea if that's reasonable or not but given his pace with it and the mods on the car, I bet it is.

edit: that thing is pretty "prepped" though. Considering that it's easily the price of two of our RX8's combined it's still not worth it i dont think.

I dunno man, he's faster than I am by a full 2 seconds. I've gotten a couple rides with him, he's very good so no doubt much of that is driver but on those R-comps that car is incredible. Lots of 4 wheel slides, very little braking... In general the brakes on the car are notably worse than ours which makes the time difference that much more impressive.

Hm... tempting... but nah, it was 34 degrees when I got out to my car this morning and I want to change my oil on Saturday.

mine was frozen over this morn but it'll still be nicer to run sat and not have to drive all the way back and forth before the event on sun.

ok so after talking to the goodwin guys i have a plan.

the dtc series will never get warm enough to function on autox; they're for track only.

the ht-10 medium series may get warm enough but it takes awhile and would not be ideal for autox. he's tried them on the 8 and it wasn't that good. they're excellent for track only though.

his recommendation (and what he runs personally on the 8) is the porterfield r4 race compound pad. with this you'll have to warm them up a bit by dragging the brakes a bit on the way up the autox start line, but they heat up quickly and perform well right away, even when somewhat cool. they're also cheaper that the hawks and are perfect for an all around track pad. more aggressive that the mazdaspeed but with similar benefits. you can even drive them home and swap them out there if you dont live in rainy cold seattle but somewhere warmer instead. ;)

i think i'll run the mazdaspeed into the ground, then swap in ceramics for dd and these porterfield for track days and see how that goes. also a bbk is sounding nicer every day just for the one pin ease of swapping pads in and out.

he also said if you let them sit for like a session at the end of the day they'll cool enough to pull out with the wheels/tires.

Porterfield seem like a pretty good option. Have you looked into Racing Brake ET800?

i'm not too worried about buying something that's not perfect first time around as it's not really a big deal to go through some pads while finding a good fit. consumables like pads and tires are nice to change up and experience the differences i think.

Yeah i hear ya. I go insane reading stuff before i ever buy anything. Even after all the research i always second guess myself and think maybe i should have got something else. Vicious cycle.

Yah, but you still want the best you can get, right? I'm sticking with Star Specs again this time around but I'll be needing brake pads soon too... I wish I'd held off on the Coilovers though, at this point I wish I'd gone Bilstein PS9's. I'm happy I didn't wait for Fat Cat though. His stuff is excellent, but so much more expensive it's not worth it for me yet.

Your Stance are fine. I didn't even realize Fat Cat was considering making suspension for the RX8. I thought they were strictly Miata stuff. Not that it matters, it's way too expensive. I'm looking forward to upgrading my coilovers. I regret not doing any autocross or track days on the stock suspension. It would have given me another perspective for understanding what makes this car handle like it does.

The spring rates are fine, but I have low confidence in the shocks... Fat Cat wants ~$1800 for shocks, like ~$3200 for fully adjustable coilovers.

Plain PS9's are $1600 something, $400 more than my stances with a lower spring rate. Thing is, I bet the adjusters on the Stances are garbage while Bilsteins are generally linear. This is all going off that AutoX shock dissertation that's out there. I can find it if you want when I get home.

No worries. I'm not trying to set my car up for autocross but it might be an interesting read. I'm still set on the KWVIII's right now. There's not a lot out there that compete with them without spending boat loads of money.

Very, very true. Those are a very good set and a pretty reasonable choice for a next step for you. The guide really opened my eyes to the shear amount I don't know about shocks and suspension tuning. There've been some technical discussions in the STX thread that, when added to the shock guide, brought me to the conclusion that I'm never touching my shock adjusters and in general, I'm going to leave my car in exactly the same setup for the first half of this season.
