ID New RX8 Owner

I recently purchased a 2004 RX8 and wanted to say hello to any local members. So far I love driving the car...but I hate putting gas in it.

I am purchasing my first "mod" for this car later today. I came across a Cobb accessport in the FS section. I am really interested in the Economy setting (obvious reasons) but I have read throughout this board that it is hard on the apex seals....any one have experience with this?

For a breif car history I have owned: (of interest anyway)

2006 MazdaSpeed 6 - Fujita CAI, SS 3" catless dp I loved this car...the exwife totaled it in January. Best 1/4 mile time was a 13.9

2003 SRT-4 - SS turbo manifold, XS power .6x trim turbo, Apexi SAFC, OBX FMIC, XS Power WG, 1g DSM BOV, Home made 3" SS exhaust. Best 1/4 mile time was 12.95, but this was on the OEM turbo.

1997 Talon Tsi - Bone stock

1999 Dodge Neon Competition Coupe - SRT-4 Turbo and manifold, SRT-4 catless exhaust, DSM side mount IC

A Mazda Tech told me that driving the RX-8 like a granny is hard on the engine (apex seals) because of carbon build up. He said it needs to be reved high and the engine needs to get hot to "clean" out the engine.

Also, when I first got my 8 I tried to get the fuel economy up by driving nice, and all I got was 14 instead of 13 and my idle became rough. Once I drove it harder and let the revs get high, the idle smoothed out.

When I first picked up my current 8, I was getting 19.5 +- with mostly Freeway driving. After I got my new tires on Tuesday I went back to my old habits and got 18.5 on the last tank (still mostly freeway). When I had less freeway driving, I got 12 from my previos 8. Honestly, even with gas prices where they are, I'm still disappointed when I manage double digit fuel mileage.

Leaning the car out four fuel mileage certainly will stress the hard parts of the engine more. The key is to run the economy flash only for commuting when you can be fairly certain you'll be at low load all the time. When you're going to play, run a safer flash.
