We can always stop on the south side of the bridge - that part is open. I actually stopped mid-bridge going northbound - I didn't know there is a little 5 car parking lot there and you can walk out to a lookout, or go down some stairs and look under the bridge. If my pics turned out ok, you'll see what I mean. (goes to get camera.....)

Of course, I completely forgot about the otherside of the bridge. Hmmm, maybe we'll mix things up a little more and just plan on that. We've got lots of pictures from the north side of the pass already.

Here are the pics I took on the Deception Pass bridge last night on the way home from meeting with Jethro Tull. I didn't get pics of the construction going on just north of the bridge.

My 8 by its lonesome. Not much traffic on a Wednesday night just after 7pm.

Walking out to the overlook area...

Walking farther at the overlook - you can tell by the railing and walk-way that it's kind of nice out there.

Look down on the right - there are stairs that go down to the path that goes under the bridge!

View of the south channel from the overlook - this channel has TONS of swirly current going through it.

This is the view looking to the northeast from the overlook point - gorgeous!

So I walked out over the north section of the bridge over the north channel which was pretty calm... it was a little scary when cars when by and shook the bridge - and there is not much room between you and the cars!! I'm not sure I want to stand out over the south section of the bridge because it is really wide and over the scary channel.

The view from the same spot on the north section.

Just for fun.... Here's a shot of a semi-truck hauling furniture to Oak Harbor that almost got blown over the railing of the bridge back in January 2004 when the winds were about 55 mph. They closed the bridge until the wind died down and were able to get the truck off the bridge. State Patrol said they were afraid it was going to be blown over the railing and it's a 185 feet drop to the water in the south channel!

Those are terrific shots, Linda! I thought I tossed the digital camera into my suitcase but when I unpacked in my room, it wasn't there. A call home verified that it was still sitting on my dresser- argh! Hope you don't mind if I copy them to my hard drive to show the family.

I'm sure an entire summer wouldn't be enough time to explore that whole area. Beautiful, bigger-than-life area. Stunning view from that bridge. You folks have some great scenery for your cruises.

And meeting you was the highlight of my trip!

Why does the west side have to be prettier.

You mean the west side of the state? I think there are cool things to see in eastern WA too.

I think it's the other-side-of-the-fence thing. There's a lot of beautiful country on the east side, and a completely different color palette.

I guess so, but I can tolerate green longer than brown... but summer should be here soon.
