Greddy Turbo Install

So I finally went ahead and bought the Greddy Turbo kit. I dropped off my car last night at 20/20 Customs up in Bellingham. I am scheduled to pick it up on Friday afternoon. I will then take it to have it tune with the AP by Chris (Kane's friend) with the PPO2 software this weekend. I will keep you guys updated with this in the next couple of days.

nuke0907 11-05-2008 11:03 AM

congrats! i just found an awesome deal on a used greddy kit.

pdxhak 11-05-2008 12:17 PM

Congrats on going FI! I'm really interested in hearing about your results with the PPO2 tuning process :)

Kane 11-05-2008 12:46 PM

Ahh old Failsafe....

Pinch his nipple for me.... LOL

I'll be in the Garage working on the Corvette; so call anytime if you guys need some help.

J.Cab 11-05-2008 01:32 PM

I will keep you guys posted on the results.

Kane: I will be sure to do that..Im sure if something comes up he will give you a call. Hopefully everything goes to plan.

Brettus 11-05-2008 02:13 PM

Just finished my install , not something i would have liked done at a shop . But if that is your only option .......

Im_DANomite 11-05-2008 02:27 PM

don't forget an oil restrictor!! my turbo went up at 10k miles, i had to rebuild it using a TD05/TD06 rebuild kit.

StealthTL 11-05-2008 02:29 PM

Do you have a good source for buying one of those rebuild kits?

.......looking for one soon.

S

gregs 11-05-2008 03:19 PM

^^ditto i would like to keep one on the shelf when the time comes

Im_DANomite 11-05-2008 05:42 PM

Im_DANomite 11-05-2008 05:45 PM

i knew i should've done a DIY when i did mine. damn...

Just curious...

When you rebuilt your turbo, did you get it re-balanced?

Thanks.

ravenforbidden 11-05-2008 07:48 PM

If my turbo was stock\starter kit I'd just upgrade it with the next turbo... IE 80mm Just me... Power Addict:Eyecrazy:

no, i simply marked the shaft and the compressor wheel and re-aligned it when i put it back together.

i wanted to upgrade to the MM/BHR GT3071R, but with the way things are going over there, i have to wait. plus, $1800 isn't something i can just toss up right now.

but yea, if you are able to upgrade, i would definately do it. the journal bearing type turbo isn't reliable.

ravenforbidden 11-06-2008 11:21 AM

Not just that but think of the extended boost range come race gas...

Why wouldnt you want a shop to do the install? You have me second guessing my decision. They seem to do really good work. I received an update last night, and he said it was almost done. I may be able to even pick it up tonight.

Just that they are under time pressure which can lead to shortcuts . If they are good mechanics you will be fine - if not look out

J.Cab 11-06-2008 03:57 PM

Well I dropped it off on Tuesday night, and I was told I could pick it up tomorrow. He said it was about 11 hours of work including the installation of the Blitz boost controller. Hopefully everything works out fine.

Im_DANomite 11-06-2008 05:44 PM

dont mess with boost til you have everything figured out

J.Cab 11-06-2008 11:17 PM

yeah I am not gonna touch the boost until I get the car tuned. I am going to run the base map for the Emanage Ultimate, then use the AP when I get to Seattle.

TurboEight 11-07-2008 11:42 AM

Hey dan, Is this the rebuild kit to use to rebuild the stock turbo in the greddy kit?

The car is up and running. It's running the base Ultimate map right which is like 5 psi. The car definitely pulls a little, didnt really want to get on it to much with it not being fully tuned. Tomorrow I will have the car tuned, If you want to see it today or tomorrow I will be in Seattle. Let me know.:Eyecrazy:

yes. there are gonna be some c-clips and o-rings that you will not end up using. the kit is used for both TD05 and TD06 turbos. the GReddy T618Z is just a modified TD06 turbo. if you need help or any kind of question, just PM me. i don't wanna thread jack JCab's post.

The O2 Sensor is bad. Tomorrow I am looking to get that fixed. Right now the AFR's are going really lean, at least according to the AP. So once that is fixed then I will get with Chris again, and try to get some stuff sorted.

ravenforbidden 11-11-2008 01:32 PM

Should get a handle on that man it's like every day I get an email on this thread and it's not a "it's done at last" getting me kinda amped on drama...

J.Cab 11-11-2008 06:52 PM

Trust me guys, as soon as it is done I will post some numbers/videos. I can't begin to tell how much this sucks with buying a turbo kit and the other components then for it not run properly. For some reason when I do go into I get 14.7 AFRs at idle then in boost it goes to 20.3 which is freakin scary lean. I have not figured out as to why this does it. I am running the Greddy Ultimate base map but something obviously is not right. I switched some wires for the O2 Sensor and it works fine. The only CEL I am getting is RKE P0039 Meaning: Turbo/Super Charger Bypass Valve Control Circuit Range/Performance. So I going to stay out of boost. But right now my main concern is why is this CEL coming up, and does it have anything to do with causing my car to run that lean. It really weird because I am going to through fuel like crazy my tail pipes are burnt black, but the AP shows the AFRs going to 20.3. Not to mention my car will start "bucking" if I slowly accelerate above 5k. Also the car will die when I put it in neutral while coming to a stop. Can someone begin to point me in the right direction please??? I have checked the coils today with a timing light, etc everything else was good.

Im_DANomite 11-11-2008 08:43 PM

try disconnecting the EMU and just using the stock ECU to run it. see if that changes the AFR.

btw...i hate EMU.

Already tried that still 20.3 AFRs. I am getting ready to post a datalog of what I am getting.

gregs 11-11-2008 10:03 PM

i had afr numbers in that range when i had my emanage base map minus tunning so i ditched it before tunning the emanage

so are you saying that I should ditch the base map? Then have it tuned with a different map?

When I get it up and running I will let you know when I head down towards Seattle, and you can check out the car. Hopefully sooner than later....:banghead:

wow - something is amiss all right - better to stay out of boost till you know what is happening .
You should really ditch the EMU - seriously . I think mazda maniac is one of the few people i've heard of that managed to get it running right - have you implemented his fixes ?

I am really gonna consider ordering up a O2 Sensor. For the simple fact that I hope its the problem for the spike in the AFRs. My plan is to ditch the Ultimate and use the AP but its difficult to get maps from MM. So I really have no choice at the present time. And no I have done the Greddy fixes. Do you think it would change the problem I am having? Also above 5k my car starts to buck while just normal acceleration not even during boost.

Brettus 11-12-2008 01:20 AM

the fact that you get 14.7 at idle appears to rule out the o2 sensor . It really looks like the EMU is your problem .
I don't know what the fixes are - I just read somewhere where he did a lot of changes to it . Could have been for a larger turbo . Dont know.

Kane 11-12-2008 01:53 AM

14.7 at idle on startup is not right should be a lot richer until fully warmed up

Any suggestions Kane, I am really confused and do not know what to do next. If I unplug the Ultimate like Chris and I did this weekend, for some reason it still will show the same AFRs.

Im_DANomite 11-12-2008 10:39 AM

wait a min. how are you using the AP with the EMU?? i'm confused.

J.Cab 11-12-2008 10:48 AM

I am just using the AP to read the AFRs. From what I understood the map being sent from MM was just not a tuned map but rather just a base map so you could get the readings.

Kane 11-12-2008 12:04 PM

Either way - the EMU won't do anything in closed loop so no biggie there.

With the same AFR's and the same issue with / and without the EMU - and the fact that you KNOW your AFR readings are wrong from the AP; you can either troubleshoot the AP by using a Dashhawk ODBII reader on YOUR car or the AP on another car. Once you have proven the AP works - your next issue is your O2 sensors.

Time to eliminate variables instead of shooting in the dark.

ravenforbidden 11-12-2008 06:05 PM

I really hope this is a newb statement, but have you upgraded spark plugs in this huge upgrade? I know from when I had my Mustang GT and I turbo'ed it, when I was running it for the first few weeks I had to adjust to colder and hotter plugs to match it up to the new style of boost. The stock stuff doesn't hold shit for spark in a boost vaccuum.

Yes I am using Platinum NGK Trailing Spark Plugs...I am not sure that would cause the AFRs to run that lean though would it? Maybe I am wrong. But yes I did upgrade.

so turns out the shop didnt upgrade my spark plugs like they were supposed to. Is this my problem possibly....I just called and they are sitting over there still at the shop.

gregs 11-13-2008 12:36 AM

i really think its your ultimate, i had very simalar afr's at wot, once i got my cobb ap i removed the ultimate and just used the ap and my afr's changed dramatically, everyone is right about not going into boost at those levels that is really scary i was lucky myself i didnt damaged anything...if you cant wait for maps on the ap you can get your emanage tuned to lower your afr's as well i just didnt think it was worth investing the money into the ultimate at the time
