Got my MS Speed Exhaust installed

This sounds awesome, really sporty sounding without sounding ricer. World One Performance in Kent Wa hookup me up once again for $85.00. This saved me from having to try to slide under the car and pry the crap out of the old one.

How much did it cost you for the total job? Also, notice any "improvement" in performance?

I get really good prices from Neil at Pin Mazda in Renton Wa, better than most if not all out of websites. You would have to do some homework to find those prices+ $85.00 install. It sounds alot better but honestly performance wise its really a mental toss up.

MS Speed Exhaust
Boy, Microsoft is really diversifying. I didn't realize they made exhausts for our cars. I think I'll wait for the Apple exhaust. That way it'll match my iPod. j/k

Mazdaspeed exaust

I've got the Mazdaspeed dual exaust and I love it! I mean I don't think it gives me a noticable performance increase but the sound is so beefy yet not too loud that I will get pulled over. It's just enough to let you know what kind of car you are driving and then maybe a couple knotches more

Also as a side note Neil rules he really knows how to treat us rotorheads!

I thought I'd bring this thread up since it's a MazdaSpeed Exhaust topic.

Anyway, I decided to be getting the MS Dual Muffler Exhaust and I tried talking to the sales department over at Pinn Mazda in Renton. Well, they were selling me the exhaust for $675 and I asked them if thats the best deal they can give me. They told me that's the retail price and I got a bit annoyed because I know the MSRP on Mazda's website is $675. Sounds like they're pulling a fast one on me.

I was hoping to get a good price since a few of you here recommended that place. Ah well, I guess I'll just shop around more.

There's a particular individual (don't know the name off the top of my head) you need to talk to, and mention being referred by the forum. People give discounts to friends of friends. People squeeze Joe Nobody.

AFAIK the Mazdaspeed exhaust only changes the tone of the exhaust; it doesn't give any performance increase. I've read this on multiple threads on the exhaust and everywhere I've ever seen it listed (for sale) it never claims to add XX HP.

With an online vendor here you can get it for $500 or a tad under. My dealer will price match.

You're right about that. I read in a magazine (Import Tuner? Or was it Sports Compact...) that given the nature of the rotary, we won't get any sort of hp bump up with any exhaust upgrade. All you're getting is a change in sound.

That being said, I wouldn't mind a Mazdaspeed dual exhaust. I heard one recently and definitely like the sound and also the price.

Actually with any NA motor, you're not really getting any hp bump unless the ID of the exhaust was 1mm

I was planning on ordering the MazdaSpeed sport exhaust at ocmazdaspeed.com which is Tustin Mazda down at Orange County - Tustin, CA. They have it on sale for $540. But I thought I'd go back to my dealer and see if they can give me the same deal. They originally quoted me $675 for the exhaust a few days back . Lee Johnson Mazda in Kirkland was my dealer and I even called up Pinnacle Mazda in Renton but they also quoted me the same price.

So this morning I talked to Lee Johnson Mazda again and gave them another chance. I told them I would rather give my business to them since that was where I got my 8. But if they can't give the same deal (or better) then I'm bringing my business elsewhere. So they matched the price at $540. It should be coming in by Friday.

I got the MS exhaust, installed it with a couple friends, sounds beautiful. I ordered it from finishlineperformance.com (Rosenthal)....what's odd is that it didn't come with a new gasket and a clamp or u-bolt to connect the main pipe to the muffler. Had to end up going to home depot to find one...it works, hopefully it will stay that way.

I feel like the way I felt the day I bought the car.

Thanks, Matt. I'm pretty sure I'm going to enjoy it. My neighbor has a well-tuned WRX and every time he sees me washing my 8 on my driveway, he'd always rev the hell out of his WRX when he drives by. We give each other a wave and big smiles when he does that. So when I get the MS exhaust installed I can return the favor when I see him wash his WRX in his driveway when I drive by.

Incidentally, I got a call this morning from Jarred from Lee Johnson Mazda. He's the salesperson who handled us when we bought our RX8 from the dealer. He heard about how disappointed I was on how their parts department wanted to sell me the MS Sport Exhaust at MSRP. But he was glad that it got worked out when they price matched the exhaust for me. He said in the future that I should get in touch with him if I plan to purchase more MazdaSpeed parts from them. He mentioned I didn't have to go through their parts department and that Jarred would personally take care of the deals for me instead. Well at least it's good to know that he'll be the one taking care of me if I happen to need parts and accessories for my 8.

Also thanks for the offer, Matt. Yes maybe one of these days I'd take your offer and meet Neil. It's always nice to know more people to find the better deals.

might be a silly question but why are people paying $540 for an exhaust system if it only changes the sound?

Because it changes the sound and allow for better flow and looks.

Why pay 30k for a car when all it does it takes you to point B?

silly question tirm and no where near the same thing I was asking.

Basically you're paying 600 bucks to make sound louder. Each to their own of course, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't another reason..haha and better flow? No performance gain so what are you talking about?

Uhhh, I think the stock tips look horrible. Like a fisher price mobile in my opinion. Slap a hi-flow cat on with that MS exhaust and your golden.

Slap I High-Flow cat on with the stock exhaust and you get the exact same gains.

Ah, the venerable "why pay so-and-so just get such little return?" question. You pretty much answered that question with your "to each his own" statement. And I wonder that myself when I spend money on something. I could've used that money towards purchasing a Playstation 3. But I'm still happy with my Playstation 2. I could've used it in buying a new 23" widescreen LCD monitor for my PC. But I'm still happy with my 19" CRT monitor. I could've used that money in all other ways. When I bought my RX8 I fell in love with it so much that I knew it'll be an expensive hobby for me to "tune" it up. Before I had this mentality of "Why the hell do some people buy a mid-priced sporty car then spend more money to tune it up in order to make it look, sound, and perform like a true sports car? Wouldn't it be the same if they just buy a 'real' sports car with all the bells and whistles in it?" But now you know what, I pretty much understand why some people do that. Yeah it's nice to buy a sports car with everything in it already. But by gradually upgrading and adding stuff to your car, it's like watching your child grow up and mature. When I finally had the MazdaSpeed exhaust installed, driving my RX8 was like driving a new beast. Just like what Matt said when he started this thread, "it sounds a lot better but honestly, performance-wise, its really a mental toss up." It does sound better and it makes you feel like you're driving a true sports car. I also agree with Sovine about the RX8's stock exhaust. It looks and sounds weak compared to everything else to what the car offers.

It's pretty much just like asking someone, "why pay close to or over a thousand dollars on a body kit just to change the way your RX8 looks? There's no performance gain so why spend that amount just for looks?" If you're happy with the way your RX8 looks, sound, and perform - stock or other wise - then good for you. I'm happy for you. But some people like to tune up their RX8 visually, aurally, and definitely for performance. And frankly it's not going to be cheap. And to think otherwise, you're just fooling yourself. There's still a lot I'm going to put in to my RX8 - a body kit, a turbo kit, suspension, brake system, and new rims and better tires. Will all these be cheap? God I wish.

Personally I find it a bit insulting when someone asks that question. It's like calling someone crazy or stupid to pay that amount just for something trivial. I'm certain you didn't mean that when you asked your question.

If you don't mind me asking though, what would've been the right price for you just to change the sound of your RX8 that would cheaper but yet would equal or be better than what the MazdaSpeed exhaust can offer? Just curious.

My question was just as silly as yours. And the exhaust does have a performance gain. Is it enough for you to count it as one? Responsivness of the car? Though none of that matters. As you have said, to each their own.

if I took off the shiny bits from my 8 it would probably have a better performance gain, the addition of the ms exhaust for $600 is just a cosmetic and sound change, comparing that to getting from a to b is completely different and yes a silly question. Nothing to see here, carry on.
