A bit P.O

I was in an accident about month ago. It was a 4 car pile up, aka, the "Mallachi Crunch". Thankfully the damage was only cosmetic so I have a new front bumper and the rear was painted. Nothing else needed to be done.

Anyway, the police arrived on the scene, cited the driver that caused the accident, and handed us the accident report. I found out yesterday my license is going to get suspended for NOT reporting the accident to the DMV. I did not even think about doing this because I was not at fault and the police filed a report.

The suspension is "pending" and I have no idea if I can prevent it from happening. I'm going to the DMV tonight or first thing in the morning to see what can be done.

Anyone have any advice for me?

Well I went to the DMV today. I just needed to fill out an accident report to have them remove the pending suspension. Good thing too because they were going to suspend my license for 1 year.

ridiculous nonsense. how did they know about it if it wasnt reported? they believe the law states each and every person in an accident has to report it to the DMV? what if you were hospitalised for a week? whats the time limit?

The DMV was notified by the Police. If they knew about from the Police then why should I have to come in? I still do not get it and think it is a waste of taxpayers money.

The actual suspension would have been for no proof of insurance and not failing to report an accident. Sounds crazy. I asked why would they suspend for lack of proof when the officer on the scene took down my insurance information. The DMV said because if you do not report the accident, there is no proof you have insurance. To make matters even more confusing, they did not ask me to provide proof of insurance. However I did have to write down who I am insured with on the accident report. And of course this is the same information that was on the accident report filed by the Police.

I find it funny that an "uninsured" motorist would get a 1 year suspension where as a 1st DUI offender gets somewhere between 30-90 days.

Oregon laws...What can you say. The officer at the crash should have told you about filing a DMV Report. Like you said, doesn't make sense why you have to file a report when the Police submit the same thing. I want to say that the Dollar amount is $1500. If it is above that or there are injuries, you are required to file a report. If it is less, I don't believe you have to.

Glad you were okay!

Don't all Police reports on accidents over 500 or $1000 bucks automaticly go to the state DMV?

Check into that.

Look up the laws for your state on the internet.

$1500 + is the amount you need to report to the DMV. Not sure how they know if your car has $1500 dollars in damage though

It is safe to assume anytime the police show up to an accident and file a report, you will need to go to the DMV.
