There is your mistake.

Never drive the RX8 with great caution. If you dont redline it once a day, carbon will build up and the engine will explode.

Things are most convincing if you explain it to them in terms of math, which I will attempt to do so.

Logic 1:
If you bought a new Mazda RX-8... I am guessing you spent close to 27K. If you replace its engine...you will spend another 8K (conservative estimate). You would be spending around 35K? (You could have as well bought an infinity G35 coupe for that kind of money as you wanted)!

Logic 2:
If you bought a new Mazda RX-8... You have five years of warranty... any issues the dealership will take care of it for 5 yrs. By then I am sure you gf would have lost obsession on the looks of this car and would probably trade in for a better or newer model?

Logic 3:
If you bought a used Mazda RX-8... you can get bumber to bumber warranty for another 1.5K for another 3-4 yrs.

Hope it helped.

LOL - yeah, I was a little slow on the uptake there, wasn't I? Guess my Noob-ometer and my Troll-dar weren't operating up to snuff.

Yes, drive with caution, afterall, those rotors will just go flying out of that engine at an instant's notice and tear you limb from limb.

To the OP: Enjoy your car... I used to be paranoid as you are... (especially after reading a lot of horror stories in this forum...)
...and then when somebody like you posts this kind of questions about engine life, etc, they get offensive instead of guide you and teach you about the car. Keep up with the service and you could get a lot of miles out of it... Many forum members have crossed 100k miles with minimal problems and many others are approaching 100k miles.
Also keep in mind that replacing the rotary in the 8 with a piston engine defeats the purpose of what the 8 is all about... Remember that the car was designed around the engine, and it is one of the reasons why this car has such excelent handling....(not to mention how smooth it is to drive, and the incredible feedback the car gives to the driver)... If you really want the traditional piston engine, I suggest to get another car.... Don't spend time and money swaping your rotary in the Rx8.

Judge things for yourself about what you hear on forums.... A lot of people just repeat what they hear from other people...

Regardless of what people say, I still believe that the rotary engine has issues as compared to piston engines... but you have to give Mazda a lot of credit for how far they've gone... and rummor has it that Mazda will still work on improvements and a new rotary is scheduled for 2010.
On the other hand, rotaries can prove to be very reliable and simple. With only 3 moving parts there are less things that could break.. just enjoy you car and don't worry about it.....

I am not an expert in rotaries.. In fact, the Rx8 is my first rotary car...but every day that goes by, I appreciate even more what this engines have to offer...

^Yeah thats why I'm telling him to just chill and enjoy the car. Every car has its probs and not all cars or RX-8's have the same probs.
