When the engine is warm, the metal expands creating gaps, which creates more pressure loss around various seals around the combustion chamber = low compression. When it's cold, the metal is is closer together and compression is better, which is why you can start when cold only.

One way to find out: get it tested.

Oil has no effect on this.
