starting issue. not flooded

My 8 will start, run for about 20 seconds and then just cut off. It will not fire on subsequent attempts. Will restart when battery is disconnected and reconnected. Cant get to an auto store to read code. Where should I start looking?

Did this only start afeter you pulled apart the upper intake manifold? The first thing to check will be that you ahve your MAS Air Flow sensor plugged in.

As soon as you start it can you rev it up before it dies. If not then also amke sure you check to make sure you reconnected teh throttle body wire well.

Did you unplug your fuel injectors or remove any of them?

Clean you ESS sensor.

Thanks. MAF Was never disconnected. Throttle body was all hooked up. Only thing I noticed is there is a hose that goes to the bottom of the him that was a snap loose. Any one know what that is. Bigger hose bottom right blue clip on the top.

Just spitballing here, but if it starts & runs briefly only after disconnecting the battery, maybe the fuel pump relay is faulty?
Maybe try jumping the relay?

I think I might be flooded now. Still no fire but getting a good gas smell. Have new coils and plugs and a backup set of plugs. Going to pull plugs and relay, crank, put new plugs in tomorrow. Then maybe I can see if I got the omp sensor fixed. This week has sucked.

OK. I got in it today and tried to start it and it started, hit good for a second or two and died. Tried again and it goes to about 800 to 400 to dead. Yesterday I flushed the radiator, and have the battery just sitting in there as I was in limp mode and want to test it before reassembly of the battery. Any ideas what's going on? Any possible solutions? No CEL codes

OK. Got 3 vacuum hoses on the intake, two under the uim, one that connects to itself on the top and the 3 lines from the manifold underneath and their respective ends. Any others I could be missing? How do I find a leak with out it running?

Its very hard. Is it a manual? There is one right behind the throttle body below the manifold. The loop is the evap system and that blue connector you asked about. Did you get that blue connector fixed?

OK. So with 12.74 volts I'm getting about 230 rpms on start. When I can hit 250 it starts kicking a little. Is it possibke my starter just decided to crap out on me?

Well that might make it harder to start but that is not why it dies when its running

It's stopped running. Pulled fuel relay and plugs and deflooded with new lead plugs. All NGK iridium's in it with less than 200 on them. Same for coil packs and wires. Next going to try to add oil to increase compression. Had to stop for today. Stupid thunderstorms and tornado warnings. If I get it running out comes the carb cleaner for a vac test. A compression test is up in the near future. So my next set of steps are oil, fuel filter, starter, fuel pump. So frustrated.

Pull the red fuel hose off and crank the ignition. If it sprays fuel i would not mess with the pump or filter. I doubt it is them.

Id go for the starter first but i don't think its that either.

Pressure test/fog the intake would be my next step

Yeah you can build one out of a halloween fog machine. Do a google search on it. I also think theres a thread here about it.

Also Do the 20 brake stomp to reset your computer. Turn the key on, then press the brake pedal 20+ times. When it resets the oil gauge should sweep across.

HOW is the engine dying when it does? Stumbling to death is different from a slow droop is different from an abrupt shutdown (like turning the key), etc...

Just an FYI, some '04s (mine) do not have the needle sweep confirmation.

^ That means you don't have the latest flash from the dealer

It was included in one of the flash updates, though I don't know specifically which one. If you have MSP16 (the last one), then you should have the needle sweep.

I haven't called, but I have a sticker inside the doorjamb.
I hope they didn't just put the sticker on & not do it.
