ssv worn?
Hi from the UK
I have a 2008 231 with 48k miles on the clock.
When accelerating below 4k rpm I get that marbles in a can noise, not too loud but just enough to annoy me.
I check the ssv for play and there is quite a bit of lateral movement.
Would my car of had the modified ssv fitted? Is this movement normal (even when hot)?
Thanks
Antony

It thrns out that the SSV rattle is from the actuator tab coming loose on the shaft. The rattle is shaft rocking back and forth on the tab. The shaft end is staked to hold the tab in place, but on the loose ones I've seen it appears that they were not staked with enough force. If the tab comes loose on the shaft it starts to wallow out and become looser & looser.
However, marbles in the can can bd other things like detonation due to a bad/blocked cat converter which will cause some or all of the symptoms you describe. Do you have any engine codes?

Hi
Thanks for the reply, no engine codes, the engine runs fine and pulls well up to 9k rpm.
The sound makes the engine sound a little like a diesel up until around 4k.
I am fitting a new manifold as I think I have a blown gasket and cracked manifold so I wanted to upgrade, will be a good time to examine the cat.
Would the ecu pickup on pinking/detonation? I upgraded the fuel I use to 97 octane but that made no difference.
Cheers
