Series 2 ignition coil life

Just wondering how long series 2 ignition coils should last. My car has
82 000kms on it and I don't believe the coils have ever been changed. I've heard the series 2 coils are better than the early ones but I can't find a good estimate of their longevity anywhere. I was thinking about buying the BHR ignition kit if it's about time to change the coils.

Invest in the BHR kit regardless if it is time to change them or not.

Haha yeah the love for the BHR kit seems strong. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna buy the BHR kit this year. Just gotta wait for my tax return money. Hopefully I'll get some lost power back with the upgrade.

I also recommend the catless mid pipe by BHR as well if you do not have inspections.

Drink up the BHR Kool-aid.

If you plan on keeping the car a good while then the BHR kit would be a wise investment. The latest stock coils are the version C. But not all series II Rx-8 came with those so judging longevity is tough. So you really just need to determine how long you plan on keeping it and decide from there. This is not an accurate sample by any means but two buddies with 2009 R3's both had coil failures with under 50,000 miles.

Hmm sounds like it's about time for a coil change then. Gonna have to wait until the CAD to USD exchange rate improves a bit though before buying a BHR kit. I still have some engine warranty left but I've heard that the BHR kit won't void the warranty. I feel like Mazda could still refuse to honour the warranty though if they wanted due to non oem parts. Any insight on that?

Myself and a few locals have had engines replaced under warranty with the kit installed and never had any issues. I got my last one covered under warranty at 96,000 miles. But every dealer is different.

I do know Charles has addressed any concerns with dealers in the past so if you have an issue he might be able to help. That is the level of customer service you can expect from him.

didn’t somebody open the noob playpen door and set you free on the rest of the forum yet?

don’t be scared to venture put of the new member area 😱 , why would you even seek the answer here rather than the S2 forum area?

Duh!! Maybe because this thread warranted the question here. I haven't seen any answers regarding c coil longevity. Even the sticky regarding new owners start here which I have read a number of times says c coil longevity hasn't been determined yet. So if it has, that thread needs to be updated.

I have about 14500 miles on my C coils that I replaced on my 2010 GT (had original coils with 36K miles) in October 2016. No issues thus far.

Using Rev C you should get 30k+ miles before replacement is necessary. Mine are 20k in and still good.

Thanks, I expected at least 30k which is the standard but I was hoping to find some definitive proof they would last longer. I've read a multitude of threads using the Google search site.rx8club but no one could testify about prolonged life beyond 30k. I wasn't sure if I was going to keep the car initially so I didn't go for the BHR's which were almost double of the c coils. I kinda wish I had as I tested many sports cars including the c4, c5 and c6 vettes and have not found a car that thrills me the way the RX8 does. So the current plan is to keep it until the engine is gone, then I will evaluate whether to get a rebuild or another car. Currently 39k miles on it and she runs great.

I've read most of these. There seems to be exceptions even on other version coils. One person got over 80k on the original version coils. I have only found exceptions to the 30k rule. I was hoping for more definitive proof that c coils last longer than other previous versions. One person said he had good experiences with Delphi coils. All in all it seems that the BHR coils are the way to go despite their cost.

For longevity yes they are definitely worth the price. The OEM coils last a long time but probably not nearly as long as the BHR coils.

Cayman, would you be willing to speculate how much more past 30k would be possible on c coils?

The fact that "Steve Dallas" got less on his Series 2/C coils (likely due to racing) says conditions matter.

As Wannawankel mentioned, it really depends. daily driving could push 40k, racing application under 30k.

most people are just pulling rabbits out of their hat, they have no clue despite claiming otherwise i.e. the 30,000 - 40,000 mile bovine fecal matter rule

this is the stupid kind of car forum nonsense that leaves me hung up between rofl or rofc

.
