How’s it going fellas.

I bought my first rotary a few days ago. It’s a 2004 RX-8 GT. Cars got a few things mechanically that I need help on. Here’s a brief list since I don’t want to take your and my time away

- Redline beep is removed or broken- I can make the car go to 10k and nothing will beep at me
- 2nd rotary motor in the car (first one blew)
- Hot start issue
- car has decent compression but I still feel like it’s slower than other RX-8’s (I need to experiment a little more- only drove it twice so far).

The car was a steal, I talked to the guy down by almost 50%. It’s not perfect- but I’m proud of it. It needs some Tlc but I’m confident that I will have that car on the road soon.

Other than those issues can somebody teach me about promising and the other stuff that I need to keep the car reliable? Motor has 130k on it. Thanks tho. Looking forward to being part of the rotary community.

Welcome aboard!
So wait, it has hot start issues but decent compression? Those are kind of contradictory. What are the actual compression numbers?

And you can teach yourself amply by reading the New and Potential Owners thread which covers in detail everything you need to know.

Hot start could be coils or fuel pump.

Kimchi, can you post the actual compression test results?

I have to double check on the numbers again but these guys that run a rotary shop told me it’s the starter. The stock one spins at 250rpm and it was a must that I have one that goes 300rpm. If the car stalls (while warm) it takes a while until it will want to start up again. Somebody else told me to check up on my water sensor ecu’s- they claimed if they go bad they can be mistaken for bad compression.

In other words within the next year I’m going to need a new motor 😭

Let me just tell you now that you are gullable and you were lied to. Not your fault entirely, the car is new to you. However, 250rpm is still enough to start a rotary when warm/hot assuming compression isnt **** poor.

Your motor is likely wrecked. As in 95% likely.

Okay- I will double check but I’m pretty sure on the lead plug it was close to 80-90 average and start was 90 consistently. I will post the actual numbers later this week when I have the free time

Below 90 after corrections(adjusted to 150 RPM at sea level) is fail for the compression test. Do you live at a place with high altitude? How fast does your starter actually spin?

Im from central NJ I’m pretty close to sea. Considering that my motor has 130K I think it’s safe to conclude that it’s time for new apex seals.

There is no such thing as new apex seals. That's not a fix. Rebuilt motor is what you're looking for.

Hah yeah this place can be a bit direct because many of us are old fartknockers communicating in briefest possible sentecnes, but if you can handle that, we can get you up to speed.
