Rx9 ?

Has anyone heard about the next rotary? I read somewhere Mazda was planning the next generation. The article claimed that they are going to invert the engine. Think this is true or BS?

NotAPreppie 08-15-2018 11:19 AM

Nope. Haven't heard a thing. There aren't even any posts about it on here...

Honestly, I seriously doubt it will happen. If Mazda does make another RX, I'd put my money on a high-performance hybrid.

laurier.lg 08-15-2018 01:44 PM

I don't know for sure if motor1.com is a "reliable enough" source, but here are two articles that I found while searching a couple minutes ago:

Apparently there was a leaked RX-9 render from mazda:
you can see it here
I'm not 100% sure I believe what I see. I haven't found any other site that mentions anything about it. And it looks like some fan-made hybrid design between a Porsche Cayman and a Mazda 3.

It also seems that Mazda has filed a patent on a new "rotated" engine design:
https://www.motor1.com/news/62035/mazda-patents-a-new-rotary-engine-could-produce-400-hp/]you can read about it here[/url]
here you can see the official filed patent on the United States Patent and Trademark Office website

I'm pretty sure we will se a rotary-powered car in the next few years. Especially since Mazda succesfully developped a compression-ignition piston engine(which means some of the technology could have been brought to the rotary engine).

I'm stoked!

UnknownJinX 08-15-2018 03:44 PM

The inverted engine is just a leaked patent.

No idea when or how it's gonna happen. Even if it's a pure ICE engine, expect at least Corvette price range rather than fully loaded Honda Accord price range(which RX-8 was at).

Looks like Mazda and Porsche had a little accident here...

That's nothing nowadays. LT1 in the C7 Corvette and Gen 6 Camaro makes better figures.

Mercedes can make inline 4 turbos make 400BHP, so the HP/L advantage for rotary is diminishing.

The day that car is in production is the day I eat my own shoe.

Laser ignition is soooooo last century.

The new hotness is laser injection with nuclear magnetic resonance ignition.

I mean, in this case it's completely baseless speculation from faux autojournos that need page clicks.

... Which I wouldn't have minded, honestly, if the renditions don't look ridiculous.

Some of them look like something Mazda would actually design, while this looks like Mazda front facia slapped on a Porsche. There was that other one that looked more like a Maserati than it looked like a Mazda.

I want Mazda to go crazy like Renault did a couple of decades ago: Put an engine driving the rear wheels in the middle of a hatchback.

V6? That's cute.

VW had a GTI with a W12 engine with a MR setup. Granted, it was a one-off thing, but the Clio V6 wasn't exactly common with its asking price.

One-off vs homologation

I don't see the W12 GTI needing that many changes to be road-worthy. It's just that VW probably didn't bother because nobody will buy it.

Either way, I don't expect Mazda to do something like that with how broke they are.

It has 650 PS. Impressive, but take any ultimate pony car(Shelby GT500/Camaro ZL1 1LE/Challenger Hellcat Demon) and all of them will have similar or more power and acceleration.

The whole point of a hot hatch is practical and affordable fun. No one will pay US$80k+(W12 Phaetons used to cost US$90k+, so just a guess here) for a hot hatch that's not even practical anymore, especially when you can pick up a mid-engine C8 Corvette for US$60k+ that can smoke this thing(2.9 seconds vs. 3.7 seconds 0-60).
