rx8 wont start unless ssv is open?

Hi, new to rx8s but I've had many rx7s and still have two first gene. So got my first 8 about two weeks ago. A little history to date, first its a 05 4 port auto. Got it with the assumption the engine was bad. Got it to the house changed the oil, no water, put a good battery in it an it wasn't spinning fast. Changed starter and it was turning over right. While trying to start in it would just flood. Took plugs out checked compression and spark good. Tried the de flood process and could get it to start as long as starter was still engaged and playing with throttle. It just seemed like it wasn't getting enough air. While doing plugs the first time I pulled the vacuum line off brake booster and no sound of vacuum being stored.?. Well I tried thinking how the intake system worked and I tied the ssv valve to its open position and behold it fires right up, let it sit running until proper operating temp and shut it off let it sit for 10 seconds and fired it back up with no problems check engine light on now with ssv stuck open. Run the car down the road every thing seems fine. Pulled the whole intake system off the car last night trying to see anything abstracting the air flow to the primary runners and found nothing. So.... the only thing I can think of is the secondary injectors were operating and flooding it out without the proper air? But that doesn't explain the no vacuum at the brake booster before? I would really appreciate for someone to make sense of this situation because right now I cant?.

At 850rpm, a healthy Renesis only flows ~5.5g/s of airflow. The primary intake ports can't be closed, and can obviously flow this much air. I would be more inclined to think that the start with the SSV open was coincidence.

"Playing with the throttle" while starting doesn't do anything but possibly interrupt fuel injection if it's down far enough. It sounds generally like you are just dealing with minor flooding, and when you interrupt fuel supply enough, it will clear enough to start. You have covered a lot of points, but haven't even addressed the coils, wires, or plugs. Replace them all with brand new stuff, and you should be pleasantly suprised at the results.

The lack of vacuum at the brake booster doesn't mean much. I don't recall mine ever "storing" vacuum.

Thanks for the response. Before I took it apart I tested the wires, coils, plugs and all tested good, real bright spark across the plug. I tried different things trying to get the car to run. After getting it to run with the ssv open it runs good, with not playing with the throttle, cranks fast right away. Right after I shut the car off I closed the ssv and tried to start it and it doesn't even try to cough and it floods. Then I tied the ssv open and it fires right up with a little stumble and clears out perfectly. I know that spark energy mite be a factor so I'm trying to put together my own ls2 coil swap. And to bring up the vacuum at the brake booster; after getting it to run and turning it off I have real strong vacuum between the booster and the check valve.?

Update on the situation, when the car running at idle if I untied the ssv from the open position to the closed position the engine would immediately die and would not start until I tied the ssv open.

Hmm. I'm trying to think why the SSV state will affect engine ability to start. It doesn't make any sense to me though. All it's doing is changing the maximum peak airflow available, and it doesn't open till ~4,500rpm, so the engine has plenty of airflow to start with it closed.

I keep pondering if maybe open vs closed would be causing a vacuum difference (since it is actuated by vacuum), but vacuum would affect the ability to stay started, not the ability to start in the first place. So even if it died immediately, it should always be able to refire immediately.

I mean, the only way that I could see this causing a problem is if the primary intake runners are actually blocked, which is scary.

Check your anti wet port line - its kinda like an idle control valve. It comes off opposite the primary ports on the intake manifold and should be plugged into your intake between throttle plate and maf.
