Rx8 starts but does not move

I have an 05 4spd at rx8 and while driving one day the car lost all power on the pedal... I turn the car on and the engine starts and revs while on park and neutral but when I put it in drive or reverse it while shift but wouldn't rev or move also the engine sounds weaker then before. What can be the problem can anyone help me please!?

Automatic transmission failure is what it sounds like. Possibly in the torque converter.

How much do you think it will cost for a new transmission?

Two recommendations, for what they are worth: 1) check out Mazmart and see if they list a transmission and what they charge. then, contact several of the largest auto salvage yards and get a quote on the complete transmission from a wreck.
2) Once you have your quotes, hit your local transmission shop and get a quote from them. Comparing the quotes will give you the best all-round answer and make choosing an option a LOT easier.

Before that, check fluids on the trans. See what is going on there. Likely, fluid is black and nasty. A change might not hurt, but also might not help.

Will the car roll easily in neutral?

Yes the car rolls fine and it goes 5mph on drive and when on reverse it goes for about a couple seconds then looses power

Thank you very much I'm going to start looking for quotes after I get off work tomorrow

If it rolls like that, um, trans is likely broke. Sorry. sounds like you are on the right track for a replacement. Now, it is a long shot, but you could try messing with the fluid. get a cheap oil extractor, suck all you can out the dip stick, replace , run a bit, repeat a few times. See if it gets better with new fluid. I would just use a cheap gallon or so from walmart. you never know.

Where are you at?

have to look it up, autozone could tell you.

That is a long shot, but it is amazing what clean fluid will do, if the issue is crud, not broke parts.

Crud was precisely why I added transmission shop to the list. It *might* be as simple a fix as a new trans fluid filter. Then again, it might be worse . Either way, a trans shop will be able to judge better than anyone here who has no close contact with the car to diagnose the problem. If you are nervous about shops possibly ripping you off, make a call to the BBB and perhaps they can recommend a reputable shop with a reputation for honesty and fairness.
One can never have too much information when dealing with what might well turn into an expensive venture.

In case you haven't found out yet, the manual recommends M-III rated ATF (2005 manual) which includes all Dexron/Mercon fluids as of the last spec I bought since they have been chemically engineered to be near enough to identical that they are now interchangeable. Just look on the label for the spec M-III or higher as, if memory serves, they are now up to M-V or higher.
