RX8 Series 1 231HP Romania "barn found"

First of all I want to thank the people that have put the time and effort in making this forum what it is today. I"ve been online for almost a week now and I must say that this forum shuld have a payment registration fee. The amount of work and information that it here online is a gift for the new RX8 owner. THANK YOU RX8 CLUB!

Long story short. I knew for like 4 years that in my small country side town is an RX8, but I never wanted to hear about a car that had an 1.3L engine. A week ago, thx to this "stay at home" and no work, no fun, a friend of mine said to go make some photos and sell that car because it was parked outside for 6 years and nobody showed any interes in it. On the way to the car, I was interested why it was abandoned and he told me that the car would not start only if you push it 5 meters.

Got to the car, got a new battery, saw that the car has 37.000km and tried to start it, after several tries the engine was running. I knew that I need to let it reach optimal working temp and after that I gave it some revs. This is were the love happend, I didn't knew, but the car has a full exaust system front to back, no cat on it and when I reved it to 9000 I was sure that I need to buy this car. I must say that I got the car for a good price.

Got the car to my garage, started reading the forum, and I did an oil change, new gas in the tank plus some 2 stroke oil, new coils, new spark plugs, new starter 2kw one and the car will not start. At the moment I am 100% sure that the car has a compression problem, I hoped that with this millage the engine was ok, but I was wrong.

So, this is the story, now comes my problem and where I need help from this forum. I am located in Romania, Europe for thoes who dont know. I am at the moment sure that I will own a good RX8, I love to have a challenge and I love it when people come and say: "this is the worst engine ever built". I love to be different ) This car I will not save, the body is rusted, the dashbord is out of saving for all the sun that has cracked it and several small problems, I like to have an almost perfect car, small problems drive me crazy.

I"ve decided to fix this engine and have it as a spare or a swap for the time that I will find a good RX8. I have read a few info here and I still have a few pages from the book Street Rotary. I want the engine to make it with a street port.

Can someone answer me the following questions:

1. For a street port, full exhaust system, do I need to get upgrade apex seals or I should go for original Mazda parts?
2. Where can I buy the parts from question nr 1, if I could finde them in Europe, better.

Please don’t port your engine, it’s a waste of time and more likely to do more harm than good for both rotor seal durability and performance. Like most new people and a few long term hardheads still, you don’t understand that. There’s not a single independent dyno on here proving otherwise. No point finding out the hard way. Factory parts are fine.

Your English is quite good. How did you learn it so well?

By porting I just want to port the exhaust part using the info and guides from Mazda Beat. I dont want to port the intake, just polish that one.

Most stuff related to cars and fitness are written in english, so, I got practice. Never forget cartoons, they made the base for english learning.

As of now, I think that all the parts and info will come from MazdaBeat, I love the work that they have done.

It will depend on the shape of the rotors and housings once you “open the sandwich”. If they are in good shape and all you need is a rebuild kit it is doable on the cheap. Problem is though, you won’t know what will be needed until you can inspect the internal engine parts. I generally feel, given the low value of these cars, that they are not worth rebuilding. Always easier to find a used engine that is known good. This car sat for far too long and you were thrashing on it once you got it running after all these years. Might be a difficult rebuild, might be easy.

Interesting.

My recommendation again is not to port it for the reasons stated, but then I’m not trying to sell you something.

You’re the one who’ll have to live with it though. So good luck.
