Sounds like limp mode which is usually a problem with the OMP motor/position sensor. Get the code read to confirm.

Get the code read, if it does not it is likely the OMP has failed, OMP codes are manufacture specific and not all scanner can read them.
If you get a OMP code then it is your OMP issue.
If you have a P0420 that means your cat has failed and clogged.

I have the same issue, CEL on steady not flashing, had the codes read and there was only one and it came up as MAP sensor. Bought one replaced it and it was worse. RPM surge and not idling very well. Put old one back in and it ran fine and was no longer in limp mode. Drove it about 25 miles no problems at all. Started it this morning to go to work and back in limp mode. So, back to drawing board. (CEL light never went off, just not in limp mode) I know the cat is going bad, the terrible rotten egg smell, waiting for it to arrive to replace it.

OMP maulfuction, Brettus has a thread on this topic about OMP and this contains the info on how to adjust it.
Edit: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tec...cation-268559/ This thread contains valuable information before you go ahead and replace the OMP which will cost you $1000+ new. P1688 can be as simple as the position switch is out of alignment.

Ouch those things are expensive to replace.
Check the workshop manual for troubleshooting.
I think a PDF version is somewhere here in the site or go to foxit.ca

I would start with inspecting the wires and connections to the omp.

You don't need an entire new OMP to fix this usually, in many cases it's a problem in wiring to the OMP or incorrectly aligned OMP motor/sensor. Search the forum for how others have fixed P1688.

Also it's often a sign someone had the engine out and didn't connect the OMP back properly.

if i were to adjust the position sensor, is it to anticlockwise? Or clockwise?

No way to tell, try either direction until it works. This happens a lot and there are many threads about it.

it depends on how it is out of alignment, you need to go through the thread and compare it to your OMP to determine the failure mode.
