Reverse "Grinding" noise?

A couple times I have come across this issue, although i don't think its actual grinding, but it is a horrible noise.

I shift into reverse, let off the clutch and when it catches it makes this noise that I can only call grinding. I don't believe it is though because the shifter isn't vibrating, and it doesn't sound like actual gear grinding. Sincerely hope someone knows what it is cause i'm confused.

EDIT: After thinking about it more it's definitely not a grind, unless i'm completly wrong. It's more like a, mechanical whirring sound.

I think its something to do with Shifter itself or synchros not exactly sure.. but bascially the Gear is not going in all the way it happens to me too at time, esp when my car is cold. You shift in reverse and let go of clutch and it just makes the noise.

I thought it was the shifter as well. It sounds like something is just spinning freely. At least if it's the shifter I can replace it easily, synchros I never replaced so I dunno. As for now i'll leave it unless it gets worse or if it's something that could be serious.

well were you moving when this happens?
if not then its not engaging the gears causing grinding. make sure the engine mounts are all in good shape.

Not moving at all, was parked, shifted into reverse, let off clutch to engadge and it happened. It's just weird because the shifter doesnt vibrate like it's grinding, and it sounds different than grinding.

Thanks, i'll check the mounts and see what's up.

There are no synchros in reverse or first gear.

You are not engaging the gear all the way. Keep pressure on the shifter in the direction of reverse as you let off the clutch.

You'll feel it click and engage when the clutch starts to grab

I have this issue too.

OK ok good to know. Is it a problem that I should monitor in case it gets harder to catch, or is it normal and something I shouldn't think about?

EDIT: Tried holding the shifter back and you're exactly right, I felt it grab while letting go of the clutch and no problem this time.

This occurs because those gears do not have synchronizers to align the gears for you so you have to do the work in its place.
