A red line a day...

I've heard several different recommendations on how to redline the car:
  • On neutral
I only heard this recently: while driving on a highway, put the car in neutral or press the clutch, rev up and then change back to the gear
  • While switching
This is what I normally do, when I change from 2nd to 3rd or from 3rd to 4th, I try to redline before changing if the speed limit allows it.
  • Before turning off
Redline it and turn the key before calling it a night.

Is there a difference between redlining the car while there's load on the engine? Driving vs neutral or parked?

DO you normally redline your car on low gear or on a high gear?

The first and third options you list there are COMPLETELY pointless. The second is the proper way to do it.

Redline in neutral is only moving something like 20-30g/s of air. Redline in gear at speed is moving more like 200-200g/s of air. It's the heat and airflow that you need for the "redline benefit" of carbon cleaning.

Redlining before shutting off the car just comes from people that think that helps them not to flood later on, and they think so incorrectly.

How do I shut off an RX-8?
This somewhat ridiculous question keeps popping up recently. Other than the obvious "turn the key counter clockwise and remove", there is literally nothing special that you have to do. You will find people that insist that I am wrong in making this statement, but no, it is just that they are taking one symptom and extrapolating preventative measures even further off base than they already were. For example, you will find people that swear by reving the engine to 4,000rpm in neutral and cutting the key out there, with the revs up. They are doing this under the assumption that the faster spinning rotors will help sweep excess fuel out of the rotor housing, to prevent a flood. The problem with this idea is already explained in the Flooding section above. If your engine is already warm, there is no excess fuel being dumped in! (Except perhaps the fuel needed to rev to 4,000rpm). Shutting it off at 4,000rpm is no different in terms of fuel than shutting it off at 750rpm. If your engine is currently cold, then this could only POSSIBLY have an impact if your ignition or starter or battery is failing, in which case 'yes', it might help prevent a flood. But a flood is a symptom of another issue anyway, and only happens on START, not on SHUTDOWN.

I've got a prior post around here somewhere about not worrying about redlining so clinicly. Just drive it enjoyably, and stop trying to make it a specific procedure or planned event. Sex is better spontaneously...isn't it? Same thing.

Here it is:

There is no "set in stone" frequency, because you would be taking something that is a fun part of owning the car and trying to restrict it to a cold schedule. For example, some people say "once a day", some people say "every time you drive", etc... My commute for my last job was 13 miles one way. I would typically hit that redline beep 6-15 times EACH WAY. Yes, first and second gear DO count (40mph and 63mph respectively)

It really isn't something to over-think. It's something to try to get people that are stuck in piston mentality to know that it is not only OK to go to redline, but it is healthy! Like the first time my best friend drove my 8, he shifted at ~3,000rpm, and I had to push him and egg him into actually going full throttle to redline before he actually understood what I was talking about. Just don't "baby" the revs. Baby the engine with fluids and ignition changes, but don't baby the revs. Let it rev and have fun doing it!

I just did a search and it seems I introduced the phrase "A redline a day keeps the carbon away." here on RX8Club. https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tec...eposits-90488/
Prior to that the saying was "a redline a day keeps the mechanic away."

I will redline the car in any gear when it is appropriate. You pretty much can throw out 4,5 & 6th for routine driving. So that leaved 1st & 2nd. And, sometimes 3rd on the expressway when there isn't any traffic. Extended running at redline will harm the engine.
